Mom Killed in Crash
A tragic accident on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County has left a 32-year-old mother dead and her three children hospitalized after a violent collision involving a Ford F-350 and a Honda Odyssey minivan. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed the crash occurred late Monday afternoon and was triggered by a tire blowout on the pickup truck.
Crash Details
According to investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 4:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95, near mile marker 310. The preliminary report indicates that a Ford F-350 experienced a sudden tire blowout, causing the driver to lose control of the large truck. The vehicle veered sharply across multiple lanes and collided with a Honda Odyssey driven by Olivia Maggs, 32, of Jacksonville.
The impact forced the minivan off the roadway and into a ditch, where it came to a violent stop. Maggs, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Children Injured in the Crash
Maggs’ three children—ages 10, 7, and 4—were all in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Each child suffered various injuries, though none are believed to be life-threatening. They were transported by ambulance to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville for treatment and observation.
“While their physical injuries appear to be moderate, the emotional trauma these children now face is immeasurable,” said FHP spokesperson Sgt. Dylan Thomas during a press briefing on Tuesday morning. “We are grateful they survived, but our hearts break for their devastating loss.”
Victim Identified as Olivia Maggs
Olivia Maggs was described by friends and family as a loving mother, active community volunteer, and dedicated professional. She worked as a licensed practical nurse and had spent the weekend traveling with her children after attending a family gathering in Palm Coast.
“She lived for her kids,” said Rachel Donnelly, a family friend. “Everything she did was for them. This tragedy is just too much to comprehend.”
The family is now rallying around the children, who are being cared for by relatives while receiving counseling and medical attention.
Investigation Continues
The driver of the Ford F-350, a 45-year-old man from Gainesville, remained on the scene and cooperated fully with authorities. FHP stated that no signs of impairment were observed, and no charges have been filed at this time. However, the investigation remains active.
Officials believe the tire blowout was the critical factor in the crash. The Florida Department of Transportation is expected to assist in a mechanical review of the truck’s tire to determine whether it was due to age, wear, or a manufacturing defect.
“No one expects something like this to happen during a routine drive on the highway,” said Sgt. Thomas. “This highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly when it comes to tires on large vehicles like trucks.”
Community Response and Support
The loss of Olivia Maggs has sent shockwaves through her neighborhood and professional circles. A candlelight vigil is being planned for Thursday evening at Friendship Park in Jacksonville, where friends, neighbors, and coworkers are expected to gather in her memory.
A fundraiser launched by Maggs’ sister has already raised over $20,000 in less than 24 hours to help cover funeral expenses and provide long-term support for the children. Local churches and family services organizations have also stepped forward to offer assistance and counseling.
Safety Warning from Authorities
In light of this incident, FHP and other traffic safety officials are once again urging drivers to inspect their tires regularly—especially before long trips or driving in high-speed traffic zones.
“Tire maintenance isn’t just about avoiding inconvenience. It’s about saving lives,” said Sgt. Thomas. “This tragic incident could happen to anyone. We urge all drivers to stay vigilant.”
