Two Men Arrested for Ambushing Undercover Detectives in Jacksonville
Two men have been arrested in connection with the ambush shooting of two undercover detectives from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), Sheriff T.K. Waters announced Thursday. The suspects, Anthony Trotter and Ja’von Brown, face two counts of attempted murder in relation to the September 20 attack.
The incident occurred while the detectives were conducting a narcotics investigation on Florida Avenue. According to Waters, Trotter and Brown opened fire on the detectives’ unmarked vehicle, with at least 18 rounds being discharged. Several bullets struck the car, but fortunately, neither detective was injured.
JSO officials stated that the suspects were inside a silver sedan during the ambush, with Brown firing the shots while Trotter acted as the getaway driver. After the shooting, the vehicle quickly fled the scene.
Through the use of surveillance footage and advanced investigative technology, authorities were able to track down the silver sedan. A traffic stop led to Trotter’s arrest, and further investigation resulted in the arrest of Brown, who was taken into custody at his residence. Investigators believe that Brown mistook the detectives for rival gang members, prompting the shooting.
Both men were arrested within six days of the incident, showcasing the swift response of law enforcement. Sheriff Waters emphasized the dangers faced by officers working undercover and praised the dedication of the department in bringing the suspects to justice.
As the investigation continues, JSO is urging anyone with further information about the case to come forward. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges police face in combating violent crime in Jacksonville, especially as they continue efforts to address drug-related activity in the area.
