Islam Makhachev solidified his status as the UFC lightweight champion with a stunning fifth-round submission victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302. The champion’s victory, achieved via D’arce choke at 2:42 of Round 5, marked his third consecutive successful title defense and extended his winning streak to 14 straight fights.

From the opening bell, Makhachev showcased his renowned grappling prowess. He swiftly put Poirier on the canvas within the first round, advancing to his back and maintaining control for the remainder of the round. Poirier, known for his resilience and well-rounded skill set, defended diligently, but Makhachev’s superior grappling left little room for the challenger to maneuver.

As the fight progressed, Poirier managed to stifle Makhachev’s advances, turning the bout into a scrappy and competitive affair. The challenger’s ability to fend off numerous takedown attempts demonstrated his defensive improvements and fighting spirit. Both fighters traded blows and displayed their striking skills, resulting in a bloody, grueling contest that tested the mettle of both men.

Entering the final round, both fighters were bloodied but unwavering. The intensity peaked midway through the round when Makhachev caused Poirier to stumble in the center of the Octagon. Sensing an opportunity, Makhachev pounced, initially attempting a guillotine choke. When Poirier defended the guillotine, Makhachev seamlessly transitioned to a D’arce choke, applying the submission hold with precision and drawing out the tap from Poirier at 2:42 of Round 5.

This victory not only cemented Makhachev’s status as the reigning lightweight champion but also etched his name further into UFC history. He is now tied with four other fighters for the most consecutive successful title defenses in the lightweight division. Moreover, with 14 consecutive wins, he is just two victories shy of Anderson Silva’s record for the longest winning streak in UFC history.

Despite the loss, Poirier’s performance was commendable. He demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical awareness, pushing Makhachev into the first truly bloody and grueling battle of his championship reign. Poirier’s ability to adapt and compete at the highest level keeps him firmly in the upper echelons of the lightweight division.

Islam Makhachev’s victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 underscores his dominance in the lightweight division and his potential to break more records in the UFC. As Makhachev continues his reign, fans eagerly anticipate who will step up next to challenge the seemingly unstoppable champion. For now, Makhachev’s blend of grappling supremacy and striking acumen keeps him at the pinnacle of the sport, reigning supreme as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.
