USA Men’s Rugby Falls to Australia in Olympic Quarterfinals

In a highly anticipated match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the USA men’s rugby team faced a tough quarterfinal opponent in Australia. After a promising performance against Uruguay, where veteran Perry Baker delivered a remarkable four try game, hopes were high for the American squad. However, the match against Australia proved to be a different story, ending in a disappointing 18-0 loss for the USA.

The Americans began the quarterfinal with a strong momentum, charging down the field and showing early promise. Yet, a forward pas from Aaron Cummings halted their progress, handing possession to the Australians. The U.S. defense initially held firm, appearing impenetrable, but cracks began to show after a poor lineout and a penalty. These mistakes allowed James Turner to score the first try of the game.

As the first half neared its end, the Americans were pushing forward, only to suffer a critical turnover. This error opened the door for Australia’s Corey Toole, who capitalized with another try, putting the Aussies ahead by ten points.

The second half saw a disconnected and flat American offense that struggled to advance past midfield. Despite their efforts, the U.S. team couldn’t break through Australia’s defenses. The final blow came from a not releasing penalty with less than a minute left on the clock. Maurice Longbottom converted the drop kick for additional points later added a try in stoppage time, sealing the 18-0 victory for Australia.

This loss is particularly tough for the U.S. squad, who had been aiming to surpass their quarterfinal exit in Tokyo. Australia, too, had not advanced past the quarterfinals in the previous two Olympic Games, making this win significant for them as well.

Lucas Lacamp, one of the standout players for the United States, and the rest of the team now turn their focus to the remaining matches. Despite the quarterfinal loss, the American team still has an opportunity to finish strong. After a break on Friday for the Opening Ceremony, they will face Ireland on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. ET. The U.S. will play two matches to determine their final placement, with potential finish ranging from fifth to eighth place.
