USC Stuns No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 for Biggest Win of Lincoln Riley Era

Saturday Night Upset in College Football

USC delivered its biggest victory of the Lincoln Riley era Saturday night, stunning No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum behind a dominant defensive performance, explosive plays from its freshmen and a timely offensive resurgence.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava threw for 222 yards and a touchdown, while King Miller and Waymond Jordan each rushed for a score as the Trojans rebounded from a disappointing loss at Wisconsin with one of the biggest upsets of Week 9 in college football. Freshman sensation Mosley set the tone with a 69-yard touchdown run, helping USC build a commanding halftime lead and hand the Buckeyes a defeat that could reshape the Big Ten race.

The Trojans scored more points than Ohio State’s vaunted defense had allowed in its previous 31 games, while USC’s defense kept the Buckeyes out of the end zone for the first 57 minutes. The victory marked the first time in Riley’s five seasons in charge that USC defeated a top-12 opponent and the program’s first win over a top-five team at the Coliseum since 2015.

Despite a light, steady rain throughout the evening, the Trojans celebrated a breakthrough victory that provided a dramatic response to last week’s setback. One week after producing the fewest points ever by a Riley coached offense, USC found its rhythm against one of the nation’s most formidable defenses.

Mosley Sparks USC’s First Half Surge

USC seized control early, building a surprising 20-9 halftime advantage behind explosive plays and an offense that repeatedly found ways to challenge Ohio State’s defense. Mosley opened the scoring with a spectacular 69-yard touchdown run, breaking through a defense that had not surrendered a play longer than 36 yards all season.

The freshman continued to make an impact throughout the night, finishing with five receptions for 101 yards in addition to his game changing rushing score. His contributions extended to special teams, where he broke off a 44-yard punt return to put the Trojans in favorable field position. Mosley later added an 18-yard reception that helped set up Jordan’s 9-yard touchdown run, further extending USC’s advantage.

Ohio State generated 192 yards of offense in the first half but managed only three field goals on its first five possessions. The Buckeyes had an opportunity to cut into the deficit shortly before halftime, reaching the USC 1-yard line, but the Trojans’ defense held firm to preserve their double digit lead.

Freshman Mark Bowman Delivers a Highlight Reel Play

USC continued to build its advantage after halftime, with freshman tight end Mark Bowman providing one of the game’s most memorable moments. Bowman hauled in a spectacular 70-yard reception, hurdling a defender and breaking multiple tackles to turn a routine play into a highlight reel gain. The explosive catch set up Miller’s touchdown run, pushing the Trojans’ lead to 27-9 in the third quarter.

The play showcased the impact of USC’s young talent, with Mosley and Bowman delivering pivotal contributions against a defense that had been exceptionally difficult to beat for big gains. Riley and Bowman both said after the game that the coach had taught the freshman how to hurdle, making the spectacular play an especially satisfying moment for the Trojans. Miller’s touchdown gave USC additional breathing room, and the Trojans continued to frustrate an Ohio State offense that struggled to turn its yardage into touchdowns.

USC Defense Keeps Ohio State Out of the End Zone

While USC’s offense delivered explosive plays, its defense proved equally important in securing the upset. The Trojans held Ohio State without a touchdown until the final minutes, limiting the Buckeyes to field goals despite allowing them to accumulate 464 total yards. Ohio State repeatedly moved the ball but struggled to finish drives, particularly in the red zone.

Freshman quarterback Luke Fahey made his first career start for the Buckeyes after Julian Sayin injured his arm two weeks earlier against Indiana. The Orange County native completed 21 of 38 passes for 260 yards, showing flashes of promise while dealing with several costly drops from his receivers.

Running back Bo Jackson rushed for 121 yards, and star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith caught 10 passes for 83 yards. However, Ohio State’s production between the 20-yard lines did not translate into enough points to threaten USC for most of the night. The Buckeyes also hurt themselves with 11 penalties for 75 yards, adding to their difficulties in a game in which mistakes proved costly.

Smith finally reached the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown reception with 2:12 remaining. The score was the 40th touchdown catch of his career, breaking Braylon Edwards’ Big Ten career record. Ohio State attempted a two-point conversion but failed to convert. USC then recovered the ensuing onside kick and added its third field goal of the game with 1:46 remaining to seal the 30-18 victory.

Ohio State Suffers Costly Setback

The loss marked an unexpected setback for Ohio State, which fell to its second defeat of the season. The Buckeyes had not lost two games this early in a season since 2011, the year before Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus.

Under head coach Ryan Day, Ohio State had compiled a 58-1 record against unranked opponents before Saturday’s defeat, making the loss another notable blemish on the Buckeyes’ otherwise dominant record against teams outside the rankings.

The result also reinforced USC’s ability to compete with the nation’s elite after a difficult stretch. The Trojans responded to last week’s loss at Wisconsin with a disciplined performance that featured timely scoring, big plays from freshmen and a defense that consistently forced Ohio State to settle for field goals. For Riley, the victory represented a significant milestone in his tenure and offered renewed momentum as USC continues its Big Ten campaign.

Up Coming Football Games for USC and Ohio State

Ohio State will attempt to bounce back next Saturday when it hosts Oregon in another major Big Ten matchup. The Buckeyes will need to improve their red-zone efficiency and reduce costly mistakes against a formidable opponent. USC has a bye next week before traveling to face Indiana on Nov. 14. The Trojans will have additional time to recover, prepare and build on a victory that could prove pivotal to their season.

After a disappointing loss a week ago, USC has delivered a statement win on one of college football’s biggest stages. The Trojans’ 30-18 upset of No. 2 Ohio State demonstrated that their offense can produce explosive plays against elite competition and that their defense can rise to the occasion when the stakes are highest.
