Vikings’ Dominant Defense and Field Goals Lead to 12-7 Win Over Jaguars

In an ugly but dominant performance, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 12-7 in Week 10, improving to 7-2 on the season. The Vikings’ defense was the star of the game, holding the Jaguars to just 143 total yards, the fewest allowed in coach Doug Pederson’s three seasons at the helm. Despite a shaky performance from quarterback Sam Darnold, who threw three interceptions, the Vikings capitalized on their stingy defense and steady kicking to claim the victory.

The game was played in a mostly purple-clad stadium, with Minnesota clearly in control despite the narrow final score. The Vikings ran 82 plays to Jacksonville’s 43, dominating possession for a total of 42 minutes and 19 seconds, while the Jaguars managed just 17:41. Minnesota finished with 402 yards, while the Jaguars struggled to gain traction on offense, picking up only 143 yards and converting just 10 first downs.

While Minnesota’s defense stifled the Jaguars’ offense, Darnold’s three interceptions were a major storyline. It marked the first time in three years that Darnold had thrown three picks in a game, and he even threw a fourth interception, which was nullified by a penalty. Despite the turnovers, the Vikings managed to score three field goals in five trips inside the 20-yard line, with John Parker Romo connecting from 29, 34, 33, and 45 yards in his NFL debut. Romo’s kicks provided all the points for the Vikings, who took the lead with his third field goal.

Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold didn’t have a stellar day either, completing 24 of 38 passes for 241 yards. He targeted his tight ends heavily, with T.J. Hockenson hauling in eight receptions for 72 yards and Josh Oliver contributing four catches for 52 yards. Despite the turnovers, Darnold’s yardage helped keep the offense moving, even though they were unable to find the end zone.

On the other side, Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones struggled throughout the game. He completed 14 of 22 passes for just 111 yards, posting a dismal passer rating of 38.3. The Jaguars‘ offense couldn’t establish any rhythm, with their lone touchdown coming after an interception set them up with great field position.

Despite the mistakes from both quarterbacks, Minnesota’s defense dominated the day, forcing Jacksonville into punting situations and limiting their offensive opportunities. The Vikings were able to lean on their defense and field goals to get the win, showing just how much depth they have in every phase of the game.

Next week, the Vikings will head to Tennessee to take on the Titans in the final game of a three-game stretch against AFC South opponents. Meanwhile, the Jaguars will travel to Detroit to face the NFC North-leading Lions, hoping to bounce back from a tough loss.

For now, Minnesota can bask in the glory of their 12-7 victory, which showcased a complete team effort and put them squarely in the playoff hunt as one of the NFC’s top contenders.
