Incident In Spokane Raises Public Safety Concerns
A woman in Washington state was arrested after police say she drove her car onto a sidewalk and nearly struck a child riding a bicycle. The incident happened on April 28 in Spokane, where authorities say the situation unfolded in a residential area and was captured on video.
Police Say Driver Veered Onto Sidewalk
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the driver has been identified as 56-year-old Wendy A. Clemente. Investigators say she was driving a silver Ford Focus when she turned off the roadway and onto a sidewalk where a child was riding a bike. The footage reviewed by investigators allegedly shows the vehicle moving directly toward the child, forcing the child to quickly get out of the way to avoid being hit.
Child Avoids Collision
Authorities say the child was not physically injured, but the situation was described as a close call that could have ended in tragedy. Officials emphasized that the video evidence played a major role in understanding how quickly the incident escalated and how narrowly the child avoided impact.
Arrest And Charges Filed
Police arrested Clemente following the incident. She faces multiple charges, including suspected DUI, assault, and criminal trespass. Investigators have not publicly detailed what led up to the moment the vehicle left the roadway, and it remains unclear whether impairment played a role or whether there were any prior interactions involving the driver.
Investigation Continues
The case remains under active investigation as prosecutors review evidence, including the video footage and witness accounts. Law enforcement officials say the incident highlights the dangers of reckless driving in areas where pedestrians and children are present, particularly in residential neighborhoods where sidewalks are heavily used.
