After months of elite-level basketball, the 2025 NBA Finals are set — and the stage couldn’t be more compelling. The Oklahoma City Thunder, fresh off one of the most dominant regular seasons in NBA history, will face the Eastern Conference’s Cinderella story, the Indiana Pacers. It’s a matchup of contrasting journeys: one team a juggernaut built on suffocating defense and surgical execution, the other a fast-paced, fearless squad riding a wave of late-season momentum and playoff heroics.
The Juggernaut: Oklahoma City Thunder (68-14 Regular Season)
The Thunder stormed through the NBA with a 68-win campaign, posting a historic +12.9 point differential — the best in league history. But dominance in April doesn’t guarantee anything in June. The playoffs offered Oklahoma City a proper test in Round 2 against the defending champion Denver Nuggets and three-time MVP Nikola Jokić.
After falling behind 2-1 in the series and questions swirling about their ability to close tight games, MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander responded. He averaged nearly 30 points per game this postseason, and in a statement Game 7, he dropped 35 in a 32-point rout.
From there, the Thunder returned to steamroller form, closing out Minnesota in five games and adding their fourth 30+ point win of the playoffs — an NBA record. Oklahoma City’s defensive identity has carried them: their postseason defensive rating of 104.7 leads all teams, and they’re averaging 18.0 forced turnovers per game, converting them into nearly 24 points.
Their defensive success has been a total team effort: Alex Caruso, Lu Dort, Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, and Gilgeous-Alexander are all averaging over a steal per game, while Chet Holmgren is anchoring the paint with 2.0 blocks per contest.
Oklahoma City’s depth, athleticism, and commitment to defense make them a historically elite team — and now they’re four wins from their first NBA championship since relocating from Seattle.
The Underdog: Indiana Pacers (50-32 Regular Season)
Don’t let the No. 4 seed fool you — this Indiana team is built to compete. A rocky start masked their true potential, but since April, the Pacers have been the league’s hottest team.
They stunned the 2021 champions Milwaukee Bucks in five games, dismantled a 64-win Cleveland Cavaliers team in the second round, and outgunned the New York Knicks in six to reach their first Finals since 2000.
The emergence of Tyrese Haliburton has fueled Indiana’s offense. He’s averaged 18.8 points, 9.8 assists, and 5.7 rebounds in the playoffs, while hitting timely shots in clutch situations. Pascal Siakam, the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals MVP, has added three 30-point games and veteran leadership. With Rick Carlisle — a proven NBA champion — at the helm, the Pacers have found the perfect balance of pace, poise, and playoff resilience.
They boast the second-best offensive rating in the playoffs (117.7), the best 3-point shooting mark (40.1%), and a 7-1 record in games defined as “clutch” (within five points in the final five minutes). No lead is safe against this group: Indiana has pulled off three historic comebacks this postseason, including erasing a 14-point deficit in under three minutes against the Knicks.
Regular Season Matchups: Thunder 2, Pacers 0
Oklahoma City won both head-to-head matchups this season — but they were revealing in different ways. On Dec. 26 in Indianapolis, Indiana held a four-point lead with under four minutes to go before the Thunder closed on an 8-0 run behind Jalen Williams and Gilgeous-Alexander’s 45-point masterpiece.
The rematch on March 29 in OKC was a blowout: the Thunder drilled 17 threes, including six from Lu Dort and five from Isaiah Joe, in a 22-point win.
How the Thunder Can Win the Title
The formula is clear: keep doing what’s worked all year.
- Control turnovers: Oklahoma City’s +6.4 turnover margin is the best in league history for a multi-series playoff team.
- Set the defensive tone: They’re forcing the most turnovers and allowing the fewest points per 100 possessions.
- Let Shai be Shai: He’s been the best player in the playoffs and continues to deliver in high-pressure moments.
If the Thunder maintain their defensive intensity and avoid letting Indiana dictate tempo, they’ll complete one of the most dominant campaigns in NBA history.
How the Pacers Can Pull the Upset
Three keys for Indiana to defy the odds:
- Win the turnover battle — or at least survive it. Haliburton’s elite ball security must neutralize OKC’s chaos-creating defense. Indiana ranks top-three in turnover rate, giving them a fighting chance.
- Outshoot them from deep. The Pacers lead all playoff teams in 3-point shooting (40.1%), while the Thunder are just 33.6%. If Indiana can get hot, especially in transition, they can keep up on the scoreboard.
- Make the clutch plays. Blowouts favor the Thunder — but if Indiana can drag games into the final minutes, they’ve proven nearly unbeatable (7-1 in clutch playoff games).
This series is a true battle of styles. Oklahoma City is historically dominant and battle-tested. Indiana is fearless, explosive, and riding a tidal wave of belief. While the Pacers’ run has been one of the most thrilling in recent memory, Oklahoma City’s depth, defense, and discipline should carry them through. Thunder in 6 — and the birth of a dynasty might just be underway in Oklahoma City.
