The Houston Texans continued to prove that defense wins in December. Houston’s relentless defensive front overwhelmed the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, powering a 20-16 victory that extended the Texans’ winning streak to eight games and clinched a third consecutive playoff berth for the first time in franchise history. In a game defined by pressure, pursuit and timely plays, the Texans once again showed why they have been one of the NFL’s most suffocating defenses all season.
The Texans recorded five sacks, consistently collapsing the pocket and disrupting any offensive rhythm the Chargers tried to establish. Defensive end Derek Barnett led the charge with two sacks, a notable surge after entering the game with just three over the first 15 contests. Danielle Hunter and Denico Autry each added a sack, while linebacker Henry To’oTo’o anchored the middle of the defense with a team-high 12 tackles, including one for a loss.
“Flying to the ball” has become the defining identity of Houston’s defense, and it was on full display. Entering Week 17, the Texans led the NFL in yards allowed (273.3 per game) and points allowed (16.6 per game). They held the Chargers right under that scoring average, limiting Los Angeles to a lone field goal in the first half and keeping them out of the end zone until late in the third quarter.
Houston’s offense gave the defense breathing room early. Quarterback C.J. Stroud wasted no time setting the tone, uncorking a 75-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jayden Higgins on the Texans’ third offensive play. On Houston’s next possession, Stroud struck again, connecting with rookie Jaylin Noel for a 43-yard touchdown to cap the drive. Less than six minutes into the game, the Texans had built a commanding 14-0 lead.
The Chargers struggled to respond. Stalled drives, sacks and missed opportunities defined much of their night, as Houston’s defense consistently arrived at the ball carrier with speed and physicality. Los Angeles finally found the end zone near the close of the third quarter, but the Texans’ defense stiffened when it mattered most, closing the door late to preserve the four-point win.
In a tight playoff race, Houston continues to separate itself with discipline and defensive dominance. With an eight-game winning streak, a historic playoff clinch, and a defense peaking at the right time, the Texans are sending a clear message: they are built to win meaningful games in January.
