Bam Adebayo delivered a performance for the ages Tuesday night, erupting for 83 points, the second-highest scoring game in NBA history, to lead the Miami Heat to a 150-129 victory over the Washington Wizards.
Adebayo’s unforgettable night rewrote multiple record books. The All-Star center finished 20-of-43 from the field, 7-of-22 from three-point range, and an astounding 36-of-43 from the free-throw line, setting NBA single-game records for both free throws made and attempted.
The previous free-throw attempt record of 39 was held by Dwight Howard, who reached that mark twice. The previous record for makes was 28, shared by Wilt Chamberlain and Adrian Dantley.
Chamberlain’s record-setting free throws came during the legendary 100-point game in the National Basketball Association in 1962, which remains the only performance greater than Adebayo’s historic scoring explosion.
Adebayo dominated from the opening tip.
- 31 points in the first quarter
- 43 points by halftime
- 62 points entering the fourth quarter
By the time the third quarter ended, Adebayo had already surpassed the season-high scoring mark of 56 points by Nikola Jokić, and he continued piling on points down the stretch.
In doing so, Adebayo also passed his basketball idol, Kobe Bryant, whose famous 81-point game in 2006 had stood as the second-highest scoring performance in league history.
Adebayo’s outburst also shattered the franchise single-game scoring record previously held by LeBron James, who scored 61 points against Charlotte on March 3, 2014 during his time with Miami.
Despite missing several key players — including Tyler Herro (quadriceps), Norman Powell (groin), Nikola Jović (back) and Andrew Wiggins (toe) — the Heat rolled offensively.
Simone Fontecchio added 18 points for Miami (37-29), which extended its winning streak to six games and moved a season-best eight games over .500.
Washington struggled to keep pace with Adebayo’s historic scoring barrage. Alex Sarr led the Wizards with 28 points, while Will Riley added 22 and Jaden Hardy finished with 17.
The Wizards were without Trae Young, who sat out due to right knee injury management, and the loss marked Washington’s ninth straight defeat. The Wizards travel to face the Orlando Magic on Thursday. The Heat return home to host the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night.
But the night belonged entirely to Adebayo — a once-in-a-generation scoring explosion that now stands second only to Chamberlain’s 100-point masterpiece, cementing the Heat star’s place in NBA history.
