Amazon’s Zoox Is Officially Charging for Robotaxi Rides in Las Vegas

The Future of Driving Is Starting to Look Very Strange

The future of transportation has officially arrived in Las Vegas, and it does not have a steering wheel. Amazon-owned Zoox has launched its first paid robotaxi service, moving beyond the experimental free rides it has offered in Las Vegas and into the much bigger question of whether people are actually willing to pay a machine to drive them around town. The service officially began charging passengers on August 10, 2026, covering destinations around the Las Vegas Strip and downtown Las Vegas.

After nearly a year of public rides and hundreds of thousands of passengers, Zoox is now putting its autonomous driving technology into the real-world marketplace, where the ultimate judge is no longer a test engineer but a customer with a credit card.

Who Is and What Is Zoox?

For anyone who has never heard of Zoox, the company is one of the more ambitious players in the autonomous-vehicle race. Founded in 2014, Zoox was created with the idea that autonomous transportation should not simply be a normal car with a bunch of cameras, computers and sensors bolted onto it. Instead, the company designed an entirely new vehicle specifically for autonomous ride-hailing.

Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020, giving the company the financial muscle of one of the world’s largest technology companies. Zoox describes itself as a fully autonomous, all-electric ride-hailing company, with the rather audacious goal of changing the way people move around cities.

And the Zoox vehicle certainly looks different. There is no steering wheel, no gas pedal and no traditional driver’s seat because, well, there isn’t supposed to be a driver. The vehicle is shaped more like a futuristic box or carriage than a conventional automobile, and passengers sit facing each other. The design is deliberately symmetrical, allowing the vehicle to travel in either direction and eliminating many of the compromises involved in converting a normal car into an autonomous vehicle. Zoox has essentially looked at the automobile and decided that humans have been doing it wrong for more than a century. Naturally, humanity responded by getting into the robot box anyway.

Zoox Debuts in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is an especially interesting place for Zoox to make this transition. The company first launched its public robotaxi service there in September 2025, making Las Vegas the first city where Zoox offered rides to the public in its purpose-built autonomous vehicle. Since then, the company has expanded its operations and gathered enormous amounts of real-world driving and passenger data. Amazon reported earlier this year that Zoox had driven nearly 2 million miles and carried more than 350,000 riders in its robotaxis. The company has also been testing and expanding in San Francisco, while beginning testing in Austin and Miami.

The move to paid rides is important because free rides can only tell a company so much. People will try almost anything when the price is zero, especially in Las Vegas, where people routinely make decisions involving money that would cause their accountants to faint. Charging customers changes the equation. Zoox now has to demonstrate that passengers will choose a robotaxi not simply because it is novel, but because they actually prefer the experience and believe it is worth paying for.

Zoox’s pricing is expected to resemble a premium or “comfort” tier of traditional ride-hailing services. Reuters reported that fares are generally expected to run about 20% to 40% higher than standard ride-hailing prices, with the cost calculated using a combination of base fare, time and distance, along with additional fees that are disclosed to passengers. That means Zoox is not necessarily trying to be the cheapest ride on the street. Instead, the company is betting that passengers will pay for the novelty, comfort and convenience of riding in a vehicle with no human driver.

Who is the Competition and Where Will These Be Located Outside of Vegas?

There is also a much bigger battle happening here. Zoox is competing in an increasingly crowded autonomous-vehicle market that includes Waymo, Tesla and other companies trying to convince Americans that they no longer need another human being sitting behind the wheel. Zoox has one major advantage, however: it was designed from the beginning around autonomous transportation rather than starting with an ordinary passenger vehicle.

The company has also partnered with Uber, meaning Zoox robotaxis are scheduled to become available through the Uber app in Las Vegas, with Los Angeles planned for 2027. Zoox will continue operating its own service through its own app as well.

The future could therefore be considerably bigger than Las Vegas. Zoox has announced expansion plans involving San Francisco, Austin and Miami, and the Uber partnership creates another potential pipeline for putting its vehicles in front of millions of existing ride-hailing customers. The company has also unveiled an updated version of its robotaxi as it prepares to scale production and accommodate more riders.

The One Sticking Point… Safety, Safety, Safety

But there is one enormous elephant in the robotaxi: safety. Autonomous vehicles have made remarkable progress, but they are not magic. They still have to deal with construction zones, emergency vehicles, unusual road situations, pedestrians, bicyclists and the countless bizarre things humans do behind the wheel every day.

Zoox recently faced regulatory scrutiny over autonomous-driving issues, including an incident involving the vehicle’s ability to properly respond around emergency scenes. The company has also developed and published its own detailed safety framework explaining how it evaluates the robotaxi’s vehicle, software and supporting systems.

Federal regulators have given Zoox an important green light as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration granted the company an exemption allowing its purpose-built vehicles to operate commercially without the traditional steering wheel and other human-driving controls. The exemption permits deployment of up to 2,500 vehicles over a two-year period, although Zoox remains subject to additional reporting and regulatory requirements.

What makes Zoox particularly interesting is that Amazon is not exactly known for thinking small. Amazon has spent years building massive logistics, cloud-computing and artificial-intelligence businesses, and Zoox fits into a broader technological vision in which autonomous systems increasingly perform tasks once handled by humans. A robotaxi might seem like an isolated transportation experiment, but successful autonomous vehicles could eventually become part of a much larger ecosystem involving delivery, logistics, mobility and AI-powered infrastructure.

The biggest question is no longer whether robotaxis can drive around a city. They clearly can. The question is whether people are ready to trust them enough to make them part of everyday life. Las Vegas is now providing one of the world’s most interesting experiments. A person can open an app, summon a vehicle with no steering wheel, climb inside, sit across from their fellow passengers and let artificial intelligence handle the trip. And now, instead of Zoox picking up the tab, the passenger gets to pay for the privilege.

While all of this may sound like science fiction, it is happening right now. Zoox has moved from demonstration to business, and that distinction matters. The robotaxi era is no longer something being shown off at a technology conference. It is becoming a service people can actually buy. If Zoox succeeds in Las Vegas and expands into cities such as Miami, Austin, San Francisco and eventually Los Angeles, the most important change may not be the strange-looking vehicle itself. It may be the gradual realization that the person sitting in the driver’s seat was never necessary in the first place.
