Boxer Gervonta Davis Arrested For Domestic Violence

Gervonta Davis Arrested on Domestic Violence Charge in Miami-Dade: A Pattern of Abuse Clouds Boxing Career

Miami — World boxing champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis was arrested Friday in Miami Beach on a domestic violence charge tied to a Father’s Day incident involving his ex-girlfriend. The 30-year-old undefeated fighter is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as the case unfolds.

According to police records, Davis traveled to his former partner’s residence in Doral on the evening of June 15 to pick up their two young children. An argument escalated into a violent encounter, during which Davis allegedly struck the woman in the back of the head and slapped her across the face as she reached into his car. The slap reportedly caused a laceration to her lip.

During the confrontation, the victim texted her mother in distress. When the mother came outside, she witnessed Davis and her daughter arguing and found her daughter visibly upset. Police later obtained cellphone video allegedly showing Davis throwing a small box at the woman.

Davis declined to sign a Miranda waiver and has been formally charged with battery causing bodily harm. Jail records indicate that his bond is “to be set,” signaling he may remain in custody while prosecutors assess the incident.

A History of Violence

This latest arrest is not an isolated event in Davis’s legal history. In 2020, the boxer was caught on video forcibly removing the mother of his child from her seat at a basketball game in Coral Gables. The disturbing footage, which went viral, appeared to show Davis grabbing the woman by the neck. He later turned himself in and posted bail, though he publicly denied assaulting her.

In 2022, Davis was again accused of slapping another woman in a separate domestic incident, but the case unraveled after the alleged victim recanted.

Beyond his violent conduct toward women, Davis also faced serious charges stemming from a 2020 hit-and-run in Baltimore that injured four people, including a pregnant woman. He pleaded guilty in 2023 to multiple traffic offenses and served a 90-day sentence under house arrest.

Boxing’s Silent Corner

Davis’s arrest once again raises uncomfortable questions about professional boxing’s handling of gender-based violence within its ranks. Despite a pattern of troubling behavior, Davis has continued to headline high-profile bouts and attract major promotional backing. Critics argue that the boxing industry — unlike other major sports leagues — has no real accountability framework for athletes accused or convicted of domestic violence.

“Boxing has long turned a blind eye to the off-ring behavior of its stars,” said one domestic violence advocate who asked not to be named. “It rewards brutality in the ring but must start drawing a line when that violence spills into their personal lives.”

As Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) awaited potential news of a rematch against Lamont Roach Jr. scheduled for August 16 in Las Vegas, Friday’s arrest may derail those plans. The two fighters last met in March in a controversial draw that fans expected to be resolved with a summer rematch. No official announcement had been made before Davis’s legal troubles re-emerged.

Public Pressure and the Future of the Sport

Public reaction to Davis’s arrest has been swift on social media, with many calling for his suspension and for governing bodies in boxing to establish clear consequences for repeated violent behavior. As of publication, no statement has been issued by the World Boxing Association, Showtime, or PBC (Premier Boxing Champions), all of whom have been affiliated with Davis’s recent fights.

With Davis behind bars and the legal process underway, the boxing world must confront not only his fate in the ring but its own complicity in enabling repeated violence against women.
