The 2026 Winter Olympics men’s ice hockey tournament saw the United States men’s national ice hockey team finish group play in dominant fashion Sunday, defeating Germany men’s national ice hockey team 5–1 to secure a perfect 3–0 record and a direct berth in the quarterfinal round.
Despite a cautious opening period that remained scoreless for most of the frame, the United States found momentum in the closing seconds. Defenseman Zach Werenski broke through with just nine seconds remaining in the first period, scoring his first Olympic goal to give the Americans a 1–0 lead heading into intermission.
Head coach Mike Sullivan had challenged his roster before the game to treat the matchup with playoff-level urgency, and the team responded with a strong second period. U.S. captain Auston Matthews led the charge, finishing with two goals and an assist while setting the tone physically and offensively. Matthews later said each Olympic performance has been “a step in the right direction” for the NHL-laden roster.
The Americans extended their lead when brothers Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk helped generate another scoring sequence alongside Brock Faber, pushing the advantage to three goals and putting Germany on its heels.
Less than four minutes later, Tage Thompson delivered a powerful one-timer from deep — his second goal of the Olympic tournament — with an assist from Dylan Larkin to make it 4–0 and effectively seal the result.
Germany avoided the shutout late in the third period when Tim Stützle scored with under eight minutes remaining, but the United States quickly restored control to close out the 5–1 victory.
The win secured first place in Group C and the tournament’s No. 2 overall seed for the United States, trailing only Canada, which claimed the top seed after a 10–2 victory over France earlier in the day. With the group stage complete, Sullivan’s team will take Monday to recover before returning to the ice for the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 3:10 p.m. ET. The Americans will face the winner of the Sweden–Latvia qualification playoff scheduled for Feb. 17.
With three convincing performances in group play, Team USA enters the knockout stage appearing to gain confidence and cohesion at exactly the right time.
