The NCAA Tournament delivered instant drama on Friday at Condron Family Ballpark, where Brendan Lawson crushed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Florida Gators to a thrilling 8-7 victory over Rider in the opening game of the Gainesville Regional.
In a game that seemed firmly in Florida’s control through six innings before turning into a late-inning slugfest, Lawson’s heroics provided the final chapter in a contest filled with momentum swings, towering home runs, and postseason intensity.
Lawson finished 2-for-4 and sent the home crowd into a frenzy when he launched the game-winning shot in the ninth, capping a dramatic comeback after Rider had repeatedly battled back from deficits.
Florida’s offense relied heavily on the long ball, belting five home runs on the night. Kyle Jones set the tone immediately with a leadoff homer in the first inning and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Caden McDonald, Landon Stripling, Cade Kurland, and Lawson each added home runs as the Gators improved their position in the double-elimination regional bracket.
For much of the evening, Florida appeared to be cruising behind a dominant performance from starting pitcher Russell Sandefer. The right-hander kept Rider’s bats quiet through 5 2/3 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits while striking out five. His outing helped the Gators build a comfortable 4-0 advantage entering the late innings.
Then the game took a dramatic turn.
Rider erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth inning to stun the Gainesville crowd. Anthony Paskell delivered the biggest blow of the frame, launching a grand slam that tied the game. Moments later, Nick Shuhet followed with a two-run homer, suddenly putting the Broncs ahead 6-4 and shifting all momentum to the visitors.
McDonald ignited Florida’s response with a solo home run, trimming the deficit to one run. Later in the inning, Kurland stepped to the plate and delivered a go-ahead two-run blast that restored Florida’s lead at 7-6.
In the top of the ninth, Rider once again refused to go away. Matt Leahy connected for a solo homer that tied the game at 7-7 and silenced the crowd, setting the stage for one final dramatic moment.
Leading off the bottom of the ninth, the Florida infielder delivered a towering drive that cleared the fence and ended the game instantly, sending his teammates pouring out of the dugout to celebrate the walk-off victory.
Rider’s offense received strong performances from Shuhet, Leahy, and Charley Magoulick, who each collected two hits. Shuhet’s two-run homer and Leahy’s game-tying blast nearly propelled the Broncs to a major upset before Lawson’s decisive swing ended their comeback hopes.
The victory keeps Florida in the winners’ bracket of the Gainesville Regional and gives the Gators valuable momentum as they pursue a spot in the NCAA Super Regionals.
Regional action continues Saturday, with Rider scheduled to play at 1 p.m. ET in an elimination game, while Florida returns to the field at 6 p.m. ET looking to move one step closer to advancing out of Gainesville.
