France Too Strong for Morocco, Advance to World Cup Semifinals with 2-0 Victory

France continued their march toward history on Thursday night, defeating Morocco 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup behind another stellar performance from Kylian Mbappé. The French superstar rebounded from an early penalty miss to score a goal and provide an assist as Les Bleus secured their place in the semifinals.

With the victory, France moves one step closer to becoming only the third nation in World Cup history to reach the final in three consecutive tournaments. The defending champions from 2022 will now await the winner of Spain and Belgium in a blockbuster semifinal showdown scheduled for Tuesday in Dallas.

Mbappé once again proved to be the difference-maker on the sport’s biggest stage. His second-half goal marked the 20th World Cup goal of his remarkable career, moving him within one of Lionel Messi’s all-time tournament record of 21 goals. Even more impressive, Mbappé has reached the milestone in just 20 World Cup appearances, while Messi’s total came across 31 matches and six tournaments.

France dominated nearly every aspect of the contest, overwhelming Morocco with relentless pressure and attacking quality. Les Bleus finished with a commanding 21-4 advantage in total shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on target, rarely allowing the Atlas Lions to establish any rhythm.

The French attack nearly struck in the opening minutes when Mbappé’s fourth-minute effort narrowly missed the right post. France continued to push forward, and in the 25th minute, Mbappé’s speed caused problems once again as he burst into the penalty area before being brought down by Moroccan defender Noussair Mazraoui.

Argentine referee Facundo Tello immediately pointed to the penalty spot, but a lengthy VAR review delayed the kick. After several tense minutes, Mbappé finally stepped up in the 28th minute looking to give France the lead. However, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou guessed correctly and made an excellent save, diving to his right to deny the tournament’s leading star.

Despite the missed opportunity, France remained firmly in control throughout the first half. Didier Deschamps’ side generated wave after wave of attacks and held a staggering 13-1 advantage in shots before halftime.

Morocco’s best chance of the opening period came moments before the break when captain Achraf Hakimi lined up a free kick just outside the penalty area. His effort curled past the right post, leaving French goalkeeper Mike Maignan largely untested.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute.

France worked the ball into dangerous territory, and Mbappé found himself in space inside the box. The forward calmly finished to put Les Bleus ahead 1-0, sending the French supporters into celebration and giving his side a deserved lead.

Just six minutes later, France doubled its advantage with a beautifully executed team move. Mbappé received a pass in the attacking third and cleverly tapped the ball back to Ousmane Dembélé before continuing his run into the penalty area. As Moroccan defenders followed Mbappé’s movement, space opened for Dembélé, who fired home his fifth goal of the tournament to make it 2-0.

The goal effectively ended Morocco’s hopes of another historic comeback and highlighted the chemistry between France’s two explosive attacking stars.

Morocco, which captured the world’s attention four years earlier by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal in Qatar, fought hard but struggled to create meaningful opportunities against France’s organized defense. The Atlas Lions managed only one shot on target and were unable to generate sustained pressure throughout the match.

For France, the victory served as another reminder of why they remain one of the favorites to lift the trophy once again. Their blend of experience, depth, and star power continues to separate them from the competition.

Mbappé’s brilliance has been central to that success. After overcoming the disappointment of his missed penalty, he delivered when it mattered most, contributing directly to both goals and further cementing his place among the greatest World Cup performers in football history.

Now, with a semifinal berth secured and history within reach, France stands just two victories away from another World Cup crown. As Les Bleus prepare for a showdown against either Spain or Belgium, the dream of back-to-back titles—and a third consecutive World Cup final appearance—remains very much alive.
