In a thrilling championship game at the 2024 Little League World Series, Lake Mary, Florida, rallied in dramatic fashion to defeat Chinese Taipei 2-1 in eight innings, claiming their first-ever title. The Southeast region representatives displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming an early deficit and seizing their moment in extra innings to emerge victorious.
Chinese Taipei, a team with a storied history in the Little League World Series, took an early lead in the first inning. After drawing two straight walks to start the game, a bunt advanced the runners, putting pressure on Florida’s defense. Hu Yen-Chun then stepped up and hit a grounder towards third base, which ricocheted off James Feliciano, allowing Chiu Wei-Che to score the opening run. However, this would be the only time Taipei would cross home plate.
The early lead put Florida in a difficult position, but their grit and determination kept them in the game. Throughout the contest, they outhit Taipei, putting runners in scoring position on several occasions. Despite their efforts, the Florida team was unable to capitalize, stranding a runner on third base three times.
With their backs against the wall and down to their final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lake Mary finally broke through. DeMarcos Mieses, who had struggled earlier in the game with two strikeouts, came up to bat with runners on first and second. In a clutch moment, Mieses connected on a pitch, sending the ball into shallow left field. The hit was just enough for Chase Anderson to sprint home from second, tying the game and sending the Florida fans into a frenzy.
The game remained tied as it moved into extra innings, setting the stage for an unforgettable finish. In the top of the eighth inning, Florida took advantage of the Little League rule that places a runner on second base to start the inning. Lathan was the designated runner, and Hunter Alexander stepped up to execute a bunt. His perfectly placed bunt caused a throwing error by Taipei, sending the ball into the outfield. As the ball sailed away, Lathan raced home to score the winning run, triggering an eruption of joy from the Lake Mary players and supporters.
For Chinese Taipei, the loss was a heartbreaking end to a strong tournament run. Managed by Lee Cheng-Ta, who also led the team to a third-place finish last year, the Kuei-Shan Little League team from Taoyuan had hoped to recapture the glory of their nation’s dominant era in the tournament. Chinese Taipei had been a powerhouse in the Little League World Series, winning 17 championships between 1969 and 1996. However, this was only their second appearance in the title game since then, following a loss to California in 2009.
For Lake Mary, the victory marked a historic achievement. After coming from behind to defeat Texas 10-7 in the semifinals with a five-run rally in their final at-bat, the Florida team showed their resilience once again in the championship game. The win secured their first Little League World Series title in nine attempts, capping off a memorable and hard-fought journey to the top.
As the players from Lake Mary celebrated their victory, they also etched their names into the annals of Little League history, bringing home a championship that their community will cherish for years to come.
