The Washington Capitals continued their dominant run in the NHL, defeating the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers 6-3 on Saturday night. Tom Wilson scored his 31st goal of the season, and Alex Ovechkin contributed two assists as Washington secured its fourth consecutive victory, further solidifying its position atop the league standings.
Wilson wasted no time making an impact, setting up Connor McMichael’s opening goal in the first period before finding the back of the net himself just seven seconds into the second. Dylan Strome followed up 52 seconds later, giving the Capitals an early edge in a fast-paced, offense-heavy contest that saw eight goals scored in the first 21 minutes.
Anthony Beauvillier, John Carlson, and Andrew Mangiapane also contributed goals for Washington, which became the first team in the NHL to clinch a playoff berth. The Capitals have now won nine of their last ten games, showcasing their depth and offensive firepower.
Florida, playing without star winger Matthew Tkachuk (injury) and suspended defenseman Aaron Ekblad, struggled to keep pace. Sam Bennett, Seth Jones, and Jonah Gadjovich found the net for the Panthers, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Washington’s relentless attack.
Goaltender Vitek Vanecek endured a tough night, allowing six goals on 31 shots. Meanwhile, Washington’s Logan Thompson made 33 saves, improving to an impressive 31-4-5 in his first season with the team.
While Ovechkin didn’t add to his career goal tally, he remained a key playmaker, registering his seventh assist in six games. He remains at 888 career goals, just seven away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894.
Florida missed a key opportunity to pull ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division. Whoever finishes second will face Tampa Bay in the opening round of the playoffs—a matchup both teams likely want to avoid.
With a commanding lead in the Eastern Conference, Washington demonstrated its ability to experiment with different line combinations and strategies ahead of the postseason.
Wilson and Strome’s quick strikes in the opening minute of the second period turned a tight, back-and-forth contest into a game controlled by the Capitals.
Ovechkin’s seven assists in his last six games highlight his continued offensive impact beyond goal-scoring.
The Panthers will look to rebound as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Capitals head to Winnipeg on Tuesday night for a clash between the NHL’s top two teams.
