Burger’s Power Surge Lifts Rangers Over Rays in 8-6 Thriller

Jake Burger smashed two home runs and Ezequiel Duran notched his 12th multi hit game with at least three hits this season as the Texas Rangers rallied from two separate four run deficits to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-6 on Sunday. The hard fought victory allowed Texas (71-73) to earn a split in the four game series against a high flying Tampa Bay club (85-58) that currently holds the American League’s best record. With the win, the Rangers remain firmly in postseason contention, trailing by just two games in both the AL West race and the battle for the league’s final wild-card spot.

Rangers Overcome Early Deficits Driven by Big Offense

Tampa Bay grabbed early control of the game by building a 4-0 lead in the second inning, stringing together hits and sending 10 batters to the plate against Texas starter MacKenzie Gore. Burger provided the immediate response for Texas, leading off the bottom of the second with a solo blast. After the Rays added another run to make it 5-1 in the fourth, Burger struck again with a two-run shot off Tampa Bay starter Ian Seymour. The home runs were part of a full lineup effort as the Rangers batted around in the fourth inning to level the game at 5-5. For Burger, it marked his ninth career multi-homer performance, putting him in a tie for the club lead with 25 home runs while extending his team-leading RBI total to 82.

Texas took its first lead in the fifth inning when Elias Díaz singled off reliever Steven Matz (5-5) to drive in Burger, followed by a Duran RBI single off Casey Legumina that scored Logan O’Hoppe to make it 7-5. Relief pitcher Trevor Williams (1-0)mwho was signed by Texas last Tuesday after being released by Washington earned his first win since May 2025 by tossing two scoreless frames in relief. Although the Rays pulled within a run in the seventh, Corey Seager restored the cushion with a clutch solo home run in the eighth. Following a scoreless eighth inning from All-Star closer Jacob Latz who bounced back after taking a 10th-inning loss on Saturday night Jakob Junis retired the side in order in the ninth for his sixth save in seven opportunities.

Both clubs hit the road for three-game series starting Tuesday. The Rays will send right-hander Freddy Peralta (7-11, 4.96 ERA) to the mound as they visit Atlanta. Meanwhile, the Rangers travel to face the Seattle Mariners, with their starting pitcher yet to be announced.
