Chicago Police Announce Arrest of Alleged Serial Killer

Chicago Serial Killer

In a significant development, Chicago police have announced the arrest of 21-year-old Antonio Reyes, who now faces charges in connection with a series of shootings that occurred over a nine-month period in 2020. Reyes is accused of six murders and four attempted murders, marking him as an alleged serial killer.

A Timeline of Violence

Reyes’s alleged crime spree began in March 2020, when a 31-year-old man was fatally shot in the 2600 block of West 59th Street. The violence continued with the April 5 killing of 21-year-old Claudio Cossio in the 4100 block of South Sacramento Avenue. On May 1, a 16-year-old boy was murdered in the 5200 block of South Homan Avenue. The spree culminated in November 2020 with two fatal shootings: a 31-year-old man on November 8 in the 5400 block of South Homan Avenue, and a 20-year-old man on November 9 in the 4700 block of West 59th Street. In the latter incident, the victim was attacked while driving with three children, aged 3 to 9, who fortunately were not physically harmed.

Arrest and Investigation

Reyes was initially arrested in December 2020 for the murder of 26-year-old Luis Davalos, which occurred in June 2020 in the 5800 block of South Rockwell Street. While in custody, he allegedly attempted to kill his cellmate using a makeshift weapon, leading to additional charges.

The breakthrough in linking Reyes to the additional murders came when investigators recovered a .40 caliber handgun in 2020. Ballistic analysis connected this weapon to shell casings found at multiple crime scenes. Additionally, Reyes’s social media activity provided further evidence tying him to the shootings.

Community Impact and Official Statements

The seemingly random nature of the attacks has left the community in shock. Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke expressed the collective grief, stating, “It’s sad to think about a 17-year-old committing serial murders over the course of nine months. How many people were taken.” Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling added, “It’s difficult to comprehend how anyone could easily take someone’s life and especially so many in one year.”

Legal Proceedings

Reyes has been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He was arraigned earlier this week and pleaded not guilty to the new charges. He remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on March 18.

Ongoing Investigation

While Reyes has been charged, authorities continue to investigate potential connections to other unsolved cases from that period. Police are also examining the involvement of any associates who may have played a role in the shootings.
