Corey Hutterli is Accused of Throwing His Friend Off a 25 Story Balcony in South Beach

Miami Beach Man Arrested in High Rise Death After Victim Plunged From 25th Floor During Violent Struggle

Nearly two months after a man was found dead on the pavement outside a luxury Miami Beach condominium, police say they have identified the person responsible, and the details emerging from the arrest paint a disturbing picture of what happened inside that apartment. Authorities have arrested Corey Hutterli, 37, charging him with second degree murder and burglary with assault or battery in the death of Justin Zelin, who fell from the 25th floor of the Akoya Condominium on Collins Avenue.

The incident, which unfolded on February 15, is no longer being treated as a mysterious fall. Investigators now say it was the result of a violent confrontation that escalated inside Zelin’s apartment, and ended in fatal force.

A 911 Call, a Struggle, and a Fatal Fall

According to Miami Beach Police, the sequence began with a 911 call from Zelin himself. During the call, Zelin reported a disturbance and was heard repeatedly telling Hutterli to leave his apartment. Moments later, audio captured the sound of a physical struggle between the two men. Shortly after that, surveillance video recorded Zelin’s body striking the ground below the building. By the time officers arrived, the situation had already turned fatal.

Suspect Found Leaving Scene in “Excited State”

Police say Hutterli was seen exiting the apartment shortly after the fall, notably wearing socks but no shoes. His behavior immediately drew attention.

“What’s going on? Somebody… he freaked out, attacked me,” Hutterli told responding officers, according to the arrest report.

When asked if anyone else was inside, he reportedly responded, “No, I don’t know where he is… I kept telling him to relax.” Moments later, he allegedly asked officers:

“Did he jump?”

That question, asked before officers had confirmed what happened, is now a central detail in the case.

Inside the Apartment: Signs of a Violent Altercation

Investigators say the condition of the apartment told a clear story. Zelin’s unit was found in disarray, with multiple signs of a struggle:

  • Blood-like smudges on the balcony railing
  • Clumps of beard hair scattered across the living room
  • A bucket hat left behind on a couch
  • Sandals located on the balcony

Police also reported finding Hutterli’s backpack inside the apartment, containing a large amount of beard hair and a jacket with a small baggie of ketamine. Hutterli himself showed visible injuries, including:

  • A laceration on his thumb
  • Cuts on both hands
  • Scratches on his face and arm
  • Missing patches of beard hair

Officers also observed what appeared to be blood droplets on his clothing.

Investigators: Death Caused by Force, Not Accident

After weeks of investigation, detectives concluded the fall was not accidental. According to the arrest report:

Zelin died as a result of blunt force trauma sustained during a descent from height following a physical altercation with Hutterli.

In other words, police believe the confrontation directly led to Zelin going over the balcony. Whether he was pushed, thrown, or forced over the edge will likely become the central question in court.

Defense Pushes Back: “Entirely Circumstantial”

At Hutterli’s bond hearing, his defense attorney argued the case lacks direct evidence. The attorney described the prosecution’s case as “entirely circumstantial,” emphasizing that no witness or video footage shows exactly how Zelin went over the balcony. The defense also noted:

  • Hutterli has no prior criminal history
  • He voluntarily surrendered
  • He is not considered a flight risk

Despite those arguments, a judge ordered Hutterli held without bond pending further court proceedings.

Police: Case Built Through “Relentless” Investigation

Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones defended the arrest, emphasizing the depth of the investigation.

“This arrest is the result of the relentless and meticulous work of our homicide detectives… ensuring every fact was thoroughly examined.”

Authorities say the case relied on a combination of physical evidence, surveillance footage, witness timelines, and forensic analysis. This case underscores a recurring reality in South Florida: behind luxury high rises and oceanfront views, some of the most violent and complex crimes unfold out of public sight, until they don’t. What began as a 911 call inside a 25th floor condo ended in a fatal fall, a two month investigation, and now a second degree murder charge. The remaining question and the one that will define the trial is simple but critical, was this a struggle that spiraled out of control… or a deliberate act that sent a man over the edge?
