There may have been doubts about Coco Gauff’s game heading into the 2026 Australian Open, with questions swirling around her service game. But on Sunday afternoon, the 21-year-old American silenced any skeptics with a statement victory over 19th-seeded Czech Karolina Muchova, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to reach her third consecutive quarterfinal at Melbourne Park.
The fourth-round clash promised fireworks, pitting Gauff’s all-court versatility against Muchova’s aggressive, explosive shot-making. Following her third-round win over friend and compatriot Hailey Baptiste—a player with a similar style to Muchova—Gauff admitted she needed to take lessons from Friday’s match and apply them on Sunday. And she did just that.
Gauff dominated from the outset, needing only 30 minutes to claim the opening set 6-1. Muchova pushed back in the second set, using her speed and variety to force errors and win consecutive love-holds, leveling the match and setting the stage for a decisive third set.
In the final frame, Gauff regained control, improving her first-serve percentage and playing an aggressive, confident all-court game. Her persistence paid off, as she closed out the set 6-3 and advanced to her third straight Australian Open quarterfinal. With this win, Gauff improves her record in three-set Grand Slam matches to 21-6, demonstrating remarkable poise for a player still in her early twenties.
The victory also cements Gauff as the youngest female to reach three consecutive Australian Open singles quarterfinals since Maria Sharapova, who reached four between 2005 and 2008. This year, Gauff is looking to improve on her 2024 semifinal run, when she fell to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff’s dominance over Muchova—a perfect 4-0 record in their head-to-head, including wins at Cincinnati 2023, the US Open 2023, Beijing 2024, and the United Cup 2025—suggests that confidence will be a key factor as she chases her first Australian Open title. If she can maintain her composure and firepower, 2026 could be the year Gauff adds the Down Under crown to her growing collection of honors.
