The New York Mets continued their torrid streak with a 10-5 win over the Miami Marlins on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Citi Field, stretching their winning streak to six games. Powered by Pete Alonso’s four-RBI performance and Francisco Lindor’s leadoff blast, the Mets offense overwhelmed Miami despite tough weather conditions and an early start.
Alonso delivered the game’s biggest blow in the sixth inning, lacing a three-run double to left-center that broke the game open after an intentional walk to Juan Soto loaded the bases. It was Alonso’s second extra-base hit of the day—his earlier wind-aided pop-fly double in shallow right fooled Kyle Stowers and drove in a run as Soto crossed the plate.
“Pete’s been clutch for us, and he came through again,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “He’s locked in.”
Lindor got things rolling early, launching a leadoff homer—the 21st of his career—off Marlins starter Calvin Faucher to give New York an early 1-0 lead. The shortstop has now notched a leadoff hit in five straight games, the longest such streak by a Met since Jose Reyes in 2011.
The key turning point came in the fifth. Tied at 2-2, the Mets capitalized on a defensive miscue by Marlins first baseman Matt Mervis and a walk to Alonso to load the bases. Brandon Nimmo, previously just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position, delivered a two-run double to right-center. Two batters later, Starling Marte dropped a two-run single just beyond the glove of diving second baseman Otto Lopez to make it 6-2.
Miami clawed back to make it 6-5 behind a two-run homer from Derek Hill and a three-RBI performance from Liam Hicks. Hill also made a jaw-dropping diving catch on the left-center warning track to save three runs and keep the game close—for a moment.
But New York put it away in the sixth, thanks to Alonso’s decisive double.
Right-hander Clay Holmes (1-1) earned his first win with the Mets and just the second of his career as a starter. The converted reliever struck out a career-high 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings, including five consecutive punchouts during a dominant stretch. Holmes allowed four runs and five hits, with his only other win as a starter coming back in 2018 with Pittsburgh.
“It’s been a long time,” Holmes said with a grin. “Just tried to fill up the zone and let my stuff work.”
Juan Soto had two singles and scored twice, continuing his consistent production at the plate. Lindor’s homer marked his first of the season and continued his hot stretch at the top of the lineup. His five-game leadoff hit streak is now the longest by a Met in 13 years.
The Mets will look to sweep the series Wednesday afternoon as right-hander Tylor Megill (2-0, 0.87 ERA) takes the mound against Marlins rookie Max Meyer (0-1, 3.09 ERA), the third overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft.
With a balanced offense, strong starting pitching, and momentum on their side, the Mets are quickly becoming one of the hottest teams in baseball.
