Team USA Explodes for 15 Runs, Dominates Giants in WBC Tune-Up as Michael Phelps Inspires Championship Mindset

In a performance that looked every bit like a championship-caliber tune-up, Team USA delivered a resounding statement ahead of the World Baseball Classic, overwhelming the San Francisco Giants 15-1 in a lopsided exhibition at Scottsdale Stadium on Tuesday.

The night wasn’t just about the scoreline—it was about setting a tone. And inspiration came from an unexpected but fitting source: Michael Phelps. The 23-time Olympic gold medalist addressed the team during a group dinner the night before, delivering a message centered on preparation, focus, and embracing the weight of representing the United States. His presence carried over into game day, where he watched from the field alongside his children, soaking in batting practice and the dominant performance that followed.

From the first pitch, Team USA’s star-studded lineup looked locked in. Featuring a powerhouse top six of Bobby Witt Jr., Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Kyle Schwarber, Alex Bregman, and Cal Raleigh, the Americans erupted for 19 hits and relentless pressure at the plate.

Bregman delivered the most jaw-dropping moment of the night in the fourth inning, launching a towering 437-foot home run that showcased the sheer power packed into the lineup. Every inning seemed to bring another wave of offense, as Team USA built an insurmountable lead early and never let up.

Though the game extended to 10 innings to allow additional pitchers to get work in, the focus and intensity never dipped. Every player remained in uniform through the final out—a reflection of the culture being built inside the clubhouse.

On the mound, Team USA was just as impressive. Paul Skenes set the tone early, while a group featuring Matthew Boyd, David Bednar, Mason Miller, Griffin Jax, and Gabe Speier combined for 6 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, stifling any attempt by the Giants to generate momentum.

For Skenes and Jax, the moment carried added significance. Both pitchers share roots at the U.S. Air Force Academy, making the opportunity to represent their country on the diamond even more meaningful.

The exhibition victory marks a strong first step as Team USA prepares for its World Baseball Classic campaign. After one more tune-up against the Colorado Rockies, the Americans will head to Houston to open Pool B play against Brazil.

Still motivated by their runner-up finish to Japan national baseball team in 2023, Team USA appears determined to reclaim gold for the first time since 2017. If this dominant showing is any indication, they have both the talent and the mindset to do just that.
