Prosecutors Say Poisoning Was Planned
A Connecticut woman is facing an attempted murder charge after investigators say she tried to poison the father of her child with antifreeze. Kristen Hogan, 33, of New Haven County, was arrested this week and charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault after police say she intentionally spiked a man’s drink with antifreeze in an alleged effort to kill him. According to court documents reviewed by ABC News, Hogan is accused of secretly mixing the toxic chemical into the victim’s wine earlier this year. The man, whose name has not been released publicly, reportedly became violently ill after consuming the drink and was later hospitalized. Laboratory testing later confirmed the presence of ethylene glycol, the primary ingredient in antifreeze, in his system.
Alleged Evidence and Investigation
Investigators say the man grew suspicious after noticing an unusual taste in his wine and later found evidence that led him to contact authorities. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Hogan’s home, where they say they discovered containers of antifreeze and other materials consistent with poisoning attempts. Police allege Hogan’s motive stemmed from a deteriorating relationship and custody disputes involving their child. Prosecutors described the poisoning as “calculated and intentional,” emphasizing that the victim could have died had he consumed a larger amount.
Court Appearance and Bond
Hogan appeared in court this week, where a judge set her bond at $250,000, according to ABC7 New York. She has not entered a plea and is due back in court later this month. Her defense attorney did not comment publicly on the charges. The victim is reportedly recovering from the poisoning and is cooperating with investigators.
Toxic and Potentially Lethal
Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, a substance that can cause kidney failure, brain damage, or death if ingested. Because of its sweet taste, it has been linked to several domestic poisoning cases over the years. Authorities are urging the public to be vigilant and to seek immediate medical attention if they suspect anyone has consumed a contaminated beverage. “This could have ended much differently,” one investigator told local media. “The victim is lucky to be alive.”
What’s Next
Hogan’s next hearing is scheduled in late October. If convicted, she faces up to many years in prison on the attempted murder charge alone.
