Coral Springs Teacher Arrested
A Coral Springs Charter School teacher, Joseph Michael Melendez, 33, was taken into custody Thursday morning on multiple felony charges accusing him of engaging in a sexual relationship with a former student over a two-year period. According to the Coral Springs Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, the arrest followed a weeks-long investigation that began July 21 when the victim, now an adult, provided a sworn statement describing sexual encounters with Melendez that began in 2018 and continued into 2019. At the time of the alleged abuse, the victim was 15 years old and a freshman at Coral Springs Charter School. Investigators say Melendez, who taught at the school and advised its American Sign Language club, first connected with the student through school activities before exchanging phone numbers and building a personal relationship. The arrest report alleges Melendez exploited his role as a teacher to gain the student’s trust, discussed pornography with him, and acted as what the victim described as a “sexual mentor.”
Court records and police reports indicate that one of the most serious incidents occurred in December 2018, when Melendez allegedly told the student to meet him in the junior parking lot before driving him to his apartment, where sexual activity took place. The victim’s detailed statement was corroborated by additional witness interviews and other investigative evidence, according to police. WSVN reported that Melendez later admitted to the relationship and acknowledged knowing the student was 15 at the time. Authorities charged him with one count of sexual battery on a person older than 12 but younger than 18, two counts of lewd and lascivious battery on a victim aged 12 to 16, and one count of lewd and lascivious molestation. He was arrested in the parking lot of the Northwest Regional Library and booked into the Broward County Main Jail, where he is being held pending his first court appearance.
Following the arrest, Charter Schools USA, which operates Coral Springs Charter School, confirmed Melendez’s immediate termination. In a public statement, a spokesperson for the organization said, “The safety and security of our students is our number one priority.” Parents arriving at the school on Thursday morning expressed shock and concern. One parent told CBS News Miami, “I am concerned. I am honestly unaware of what’s been happening. I’m hoping to get information.” Another said, “My kids have been in this school the last three years… it is a great school, very safe… Once we know, we will know if we have any concerns.” School officials say they are cooperating fully with law enforcement and that counseling resources are being made available to students who may be affected by the news.
Coral Springs Police are urging anyone with additional information about Melendez or the case to contact their Special Victims Unit. Investigators say they are reviewing whether there may be other victims and stressed that the victim who came forward has been instrumental in bringing the allegations to light. The arrest marks a significant breach of trust in a community where parents have long viewed the charter school as a safe learning environment. As the case proceeds through the criminal justice system, Melendez faces the possibility of decades in prison if convicted on all counts. The court will determine whether he is eligible for bond, and further details are expected to emerge as prosecutors file formal charges.
