Dallas Motel Manager Beheaded in Brutal Attack, Employee Charged With Capital Murder
“Covered in blood and holding the machete.” That’s how Dallas police described the suspect in a shocking killing that left a motel manager dead in front of his family.
The Attack
On the night of September 10, 2025, Dallas police were called to the Downtown Suites motel on Samuell Boulevard, just off Interstate 30. According to arrest documents, 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez used a machete to attack his boss, 50-year-old Chandra Nagamallaiah, during a violent confrontation inside the motel. Police said Cobos-Martinez struck the victim multiple times with the blade, ultimately beheading him. Emergency responders with Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived around 9:30 p.m., but Nagamallaiah was already dead.
The Victim and Suspect
Nagamallaiah, originally from India, was a motel manager known in the community for his work ethic. Reports confirm his family members were present at the time of the killing, adding a devastating dimension to an already horrific crime.
Cobos-Martinez, identified as an employee at the same motel, was found at the scene “covered in blood and armed with the machete,” according to an arrest affidavit obtained by local outlets NBC Dallas and KDFW-TV. Police took him into custody without further incident.
What Sparked the Violence
While investigators say the exact motive remains under review, arrest records suggest a dispute over a broken washing machine may have been the trigger. Nagamallaiah reportedly told Cobos-Martinez not to use the machine. The affidavit also cites a translation issue that escalated tensions between the two men earlier in the day. Police have not yet confirmed whether the argument was the sole cause of the deadly attack or if other factors were involved.
Legal Proceedings
Cobos-Martinez has been charged with capital murder, one of the most serious offenses under Texas law. If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
As of September 12, his case did not yet appear in Dallas County’s online court filings. Officials with the Dallas County District Attorney’s office said charges are still pending formal review. USA TODAY reported that it reached out to the Dallas County Clerk’s Office but had not received a response.
It is not clear whether Cobos-Martinez has retained legal counsel.
Community Shock
The killing has shaken the East Dallas community, where the Downtown Suites has long served as a budget motel for local travelers. Residents described Nagamallaiah as a hardworking family man who managed the property with dedication. The Dallas Police Department has urged patience as detectives complete their investigation, but the gruesome details already paint a disturbing picture of workplace conflict spiraling into one of the city’s most brutal murders in recent memory.
What Comes Next
Cobos-Martinez remains in Dallas County Jail, facing capital murder charges.
A full autopsy and forensic review are pending.
Police are expected to release more details about the motive once the investigation advances.
For now, one fact is undeniable: a family witnessed their loved one’s violent death in the very place he lived and worked a tragedy that Dallas will not soon forget.
