Darren Waller Comes Out of Retirement, Traded to Miami Dolphins in Surprise NFL Move

In a surprise move that adds firepower to one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses, tight end Darren Waller is coming out of retirement and will join the Miami Dolphins after a trade with the New York Giants.

The Dolphins are sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Giants in exchange for the 32-year-old Waller and a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick, league sources told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

Waller, who announced his retirement just over a year ago following a health scare in November 2023, told people close to him that he “missed football” and is returning to the field “for the love of the game.” It’s a sudden shift from a player who not long ago was recovering from an undisclosed illness that left him hospitalized for three and a half days. He detailed the episode in a candid YouTube video, describing how he couldn’t stand, eat, or use the bathroom unassisted during his ordeal.

Despite his health battles and a recent string of injuries that limited him to just 21 games over the past three seasons, Waller’s return injects intrigue — and potential — into a Dolphins offense already loaded with talent.

Waller’s best years came during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he broke out under the guidance of then-tight ends coach Frank Smith, now the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins. In 2019 and 2020, Waller posted a combined 197 receptions for 2,341 yards and 12 touchdowns, making him one of the most dangerous pass-catching tight ends in the NFL.

That production earned him a three-year, $51 million extension in 2022. But injuries began to take their toll, and the Raiders traded him to the Giants in 2023. He lasted just one season in New York before stepping away from the game.

Now, reunited with Smith and entering a favorable scheme in Miami, Waller has a chance to revitalize his career — if he can stay healthy.

The trade marks the second bold move in as many days for Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, who also dealt cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

With Smith gone, Waller slides into the primary pass-catching tight end role. While the team has depth at wide receiver with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Waller gives quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a big-bodied red-zone threat and another dynamic option over the middle.

Still, there’s risk. Waller hasn’t played a full season since 2020, and his recent health history — including a life-threatening scare — can’t be ignored. But for a sixth-round pick, the upside was worth the gamble for Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel.

Waller’s journey to this point is one of perseverance. Open about his struggles with addiction, he famously rebuilt his life after a 2017 overdose, going through rehab and eventually emerging as one of the league’s most inspiring comeback stories. His commitment to sobriety and mental health has made him a role model for many, and he has used his platform to advocate for those battling similar demons.

Now, he’s getting a new chapter — one few expected — in South Florida. Whether Waller can return to elite form remains to be seen. But for a Dolphins team with Super Bowl aspirations and a creative offensive staff, the move adds another layer of excitement and possibility. Welcome back, Darren Waller. Football — and the Dolphins — are better with you in it.
