Arthur’s Ride Dominates in Whitney Stakes Triumph

Glassman Racing’s 4-year-old colt, Arthur’s Ride, brought the least experience to the stakes debut in the star-studded field of 10 for Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Whitney. Despite this, the promising son of Tapit showcased his raw talent, successfully carrying his speed wire-to-wire in the prestigious nine-furlong test for older horses at Saratoga Race Course.

In a race that featured eight graded stakes-winners, Arthur’s Ride emerged victorious, earning an automatic berth into the 10-furlong Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic in November at Del Mar as part of the “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series. This victory holds special significance for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, as it marks his first win in the Whitney Stakes, further solidifying his already illustrious career.

Equally meaningful was the victory for owner Karl Glassman, who named the talented colt after his father shortly before his passing. Glassman emotionally noted that he felt his father was watching over them as Arthur’s Ride triumphed under the historic Spa spires.

Arthur’s Ride entered the Whitney off a scintillating 10-furlong optional claiming win on June 7 at Saratoga, where he posted a dominant 12 3/4-length victory, leading from start to finish and earning an impressive 111 Beyer Speed Figure. The colt’s strategy remained unchanged on Saturday, despite the shorter distance, as regular jockey Junior Alvarado positioned him at the front early and never relinquished the lead.

Breaking sharply from post 9-of-10, Arthur’s Ride was closely followed by Skippylongstocking, piloted by Jose Ortiz. The pair set a brisk opening quarter-mile in 23.26 seconds over the muddy and sealed track. Arthur’s Ride maintained his lead throughout, showcasing his exceptional speed and stamina to secure the win.

The Whitney Stakes victory not only highlights Arthur’s Ride’s potential but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting run towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic. As he continues to develop, Arthur’s Ride will undoubtedly be a horse to watch in the coming months.

For trainer Bill Mott, owner Karl Glassman, and jockey Junior Alvarado, this triumph in the Whitney Stakes is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the extraordinary talent of Arthur’s Ride. With his impressive performance, Arthur’s Ride has firmly established himself as a formidable contender on the road to Del Mar.
