Tre Donaldson scored 23 points and Malik Reneau added 22 points, six rebounds and five assists as Miami rolled past Bethune-Cookman 101-61 on Thursday night at the Watsco Center.
Donaldson and Reneau were nearly flawless, combining to make 18 of 23 shots from the field as Miami (2-0) shot 59.1% overall and dominated on both ends of the floor. Tru Washington added 13 points while Dante Allen contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Ernest Udeh Jr. chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in a strong all-around effort for the Hurricanes.
Miami wasted no time asserting control, scoring the first seven points of the game and extending the lead to double digits midway through the first half. Donaldson closed the half with four straight points to give the Hurricanes a 50-31 advantage at the break.
The momentum carried into the second half, where Miami opened on a 15-4 run to build a 30-point cushion and never looked back. The Hurricanes’ efficiency and depth proved too much for the Wildcats, who struggled to keep pace after a strong early showing.
Jakobi Heady led Bethune-Cookman (0-2) with 19 points and four 3-pointers, but the rest of the team combined to shoot just 2 of 21 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats hit 36.4% of their field goals in the second half but couldn’t overcome Miami’s size and tempo.
Miami followed up Monday’s 86-69 win over Jacksonville — the first under new head coach Jai Lucas — with another emphatic performance to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Bethune-Cookman, which took No. 20 Auburn to overtime in a 95-90 loss earlier in the week, fell to 0-29 all-time against ranked opponents.
The Hurricanes will look to stay unbeaten when they return to action next week, while the Wildcats continue their road swing in search of their first win of the season.
