Drone Captures Alleged Child Predator in Sunny Isles

Drone Helps Nab Alleged Child Predator in Sunny Isles Beach

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. — A newly deployed $250,000 police drone system in Sunny Isles Beach has already proven its worth, capturing key video that helped officers track down and arrest a suspected child predator last week.

Arrest on Collins Avenue

On Friday, officers arrested Wilman de Jesus Martinez Linares, 22, of Hollywood, during a traffic stop near Collins Avenue and 191st Street. Police say Martinez Linares is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly provided the victim with alcohol before committing the assault, despite her repeated refusals. The arrest followed a coordinated response in which the department’s new drone tracked the suspect’s movements in real time, guiding officers to his location.

First Major Use of Drone as First Responder Program

The incident marks the first major public success of Sunny Isles Beach Police Department’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) program the first fully operational, non-beta drone public safety system in Florida. Launched earlier this year, the program allows drones to be dispatched ahead of officers to crime scenes, traffic stops, or emergencies, providing a live aerial feed to responders. Police say this capability can cut response times, improve officer safety, and help protect the public.

“This technology gives us an entirely new level of situational awareness,” said Lieutenant Melissa Porro, a department spokesperson. “In this case, it helped us safely locate and arrest a dangerous suspect accused of preying on a minor.”

Community and Safety Impact

Officials say the successful use of the drone underscores its value in high-risk cases, especially those involving vulnerable victims. Law enforcement experts note that drones can serve as an effective deterrent and an investigative tool, particularly in urban areas like Sunny Isles Beach where traffic and geography can slow traditional police response. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has indicated it will continue integrating drones into daily operations, with the goal of enhancing public safety and preventing future crimes.
