Joe Biden, Ukraine, and the Military

Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States, has a strong connection to the military, and his son’s service in the military has played a role in shaping his perspective and policies. Joe Biden’s late son, Beau Biden, served in the Delaware Army National Guard and deployed to Iraq in 2008. Beau’s military service and his subsequent battle with cancer deeply impacted Joe Biden and his family.

Joe Biden has been vocal about his admiration for the military and has expressed a commitment to supporting and honoring servicemembers and veterans. Throughout his political career, Biden has advocated for policies that enhance military readiness, improve veterans’ benefits, and prioritize the well-being of military families.

As Vice President under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017, Biden had significant involvement with the military. He played a role in shaping the administration’s foreign policy decisions, which included the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and the surge of troops in Afghanistan. Biden also led the White House initiative called “Joining Forces,” which aimed to support military families, veterans, and promote employment opportunities for veterans.

During his presidential campaign in 2020, Biden emphasized the importance of rebuilding alliances and partnerships with other countries, particularly with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) allies. He expressed a commitment to strengthening the military and investing in research and development to maintain technological superiority.

Since taking office, President Biden has continued to prioritize issues related to the military. He has focused on addressing veteran healthcare, mental health, and homelessness. He has also shown support for increasing defense spending and modernizing the military’s capabilities.

It is worth noting that Joe Biden’s personal connection to the military through his son’s service does not necessarily dictate specific policies or decisions related to the military. However, his experience has likely influenced his perspective and understanding of the sacrifices made by servicemembers and their families.

President Biden and Ukraine

Joe Biden has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine and has expressed a commitment to strengthening the relationship between the United States and Ukraine. His support for Ukraine is rooted in his belief in promoting democratic values, defending Ukraine’s sovereignty, and countering Russian aggression in the region.

During his time as Vice President under President Barack Obama, Biden played a significant role in shaping U.S. policy towards Ukraine. He was actively involved in coordinating U.S. support for Ukraine during the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and the conflict with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine began.

Biden has consistently advocated for providing military aid to Ukraine to help defend its territorial integrity. In 2014, he played a key role in securing $1 billion in U.S. assistance to Ukraine, which included non-lethal military equipment and training support.

Biden has been a staunch critic of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, condemning Russia’s annexation of Crimea as a violation of international law. He has pushed for a strong international response to Russian aggression, including imposing sanctions on Russia and advocating for a unified stance among U.S. allies in support of Ukraine.

During his presidential campaign, Biden reiterated his commitment to Ukraine and pledged to maintain and strengthen U.S. support for the country. He emphasized the importance of continuing military assistance to Ukraine and providing economic and governance support to help Ukraine combat corruption, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote reforms.

After assuming office as President, Biden reaffirmed his support for Ukraine. In June 2021, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and expressed solidarity with Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russian aggression. The United States continues to provide military aid to Ukraine, including equipment and training, and supports Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership.

Overall, Joe Biden’s support for Ukraine stems from his belief in democratic values, his opposition to Russian aggression, and his commitment to strengthening alliances with countries facing external threats. His stance on Ukraine has remained consistent over the years, and he has expressed a dedication to maintaining and enhancing the U.S.-Ukraine partnership.
