Former Flagler County Paramedic Arrested for Sexually Abusing Unconscious Patient in Ambulance
A former Flagler County paramedic, James Melady, has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing an unconscious patient during an ambulance ride to the hospital in October 2021. The incident, which occurred while Melady was employed by Flagler County Fire Rescue, came to light after authorities discovered video evidence showing the abuse.
Melady, a resident of Daytona Beach, was taken into custody following an investigation led by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. According to Sheriff Rick Staly, the video, captured in the back of the ambulance, showed the disturbing attack on an unconscious woman who was unaware of the abuse until she was informed by detectives.
Authorities are concerned that there may be additional victims, given the nature of the crime. Sheriff Staly expressed skepticism that this was an isolated incident, saying, “It’s very unlikely that this individual committed one attack and then decided to stop.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the sheriff’s office is urging any potential victims or witnesses to come forward. As authorities review evidence and look into Melady’s history as a paramedic, the case highlights a grave breach of trust in the emergency services community.
Melady’s arrest has left many in Flagler County and beyond shocked, as paramedics are entrusted with the care and safety of patients during vulnerable moments. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in emergency medical services.
As the legal process unfolds, Melady faces serious charges for his actions, and investigators remain committed to uncovering the full extent of his crimes.
