Former U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, who recently stepped down from his role as President of the University of Florida to care for his ailing wife, has now revealed a devastating personal health battle of his own. In a raw and courageous announcement shared on Tuesday, Sasse confirmed he has been diagnosed with metastatic stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
The 53-year-old Nebraska Republican, known for his intellectual approach to politics and his commitment to family, did not mince words regarding the severity of his condition. Writing to his followers on X, Sasse described the diagnosis as a “death sentence,” while simultaneously expressing a defiant resolve to live his remaining days with purpose and faith.
“Advanced pancreatic is nasty stuff,” Sasse wrote in the emotional post. “I’ve got less time than I’d prefer… [but] I’m not going down without a fight.”
A Sudden and Somber Turn The news comes just months after Sasse resigned from the University of Florida, a move he made to support his wife, Melissa, following her diagnosis with epilepsy and recurring memory issues. Now, the family faces a dual medical crisis as Sasse prepares for what he calls the “process of dying,” which he insists is still “something to be lived.”
Sasse noted that he felt compelled to share the news after friends and colleagues began to notice his declining health. He spoke candidly about the heartbreak of the diagnosis, specifically the pain of realizing he may not be there to walk his daughters down the aisle.
A Legacy of Service Sasse served in the U.S. Senate from 2015 to 2023, where he earned a reputation as a principled conservative. After leaving Washington, he took the helm at one of the nation’s largest universities, a position he held until his family’s health needs took priority earlier this year.
Fighting with Faith and Science Despite the grim prognosis, Sasse expressed gratitude for recent medical breakthroughs, particularly in the field of immunotherapy.
