Former Youth Pastor Charged in Wife’s Death Nearly 20 Years After Fatal Fall at Zion National Park

Youth Pastor Charged in Wife’s Death

A former Las Vegas youth pastor has been charged with murder and insurance fraud nearly two decades after his wife’s death during a hike at Zion National Park, reigniting scrutiny over a case that was initially ruled an accident.

David Vander Meer, 48, was arrested on June 22 in Las Vegas in connection with the 2006 death of his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer. Prosecutors allege that her fatal fall from the Angels Landing trail was not accidental and that evidence uncovered during a renewed investigation supports charges of first-degree murder and insurance fraud.

Bernadette Vander Meer died on August 22, 2006, while hiking with her husband on the Angels Landing trail, one of Zion National Park’s most challenging and well known routes. The couple had traveled from Las Vegas to celebrate their wedding anniversary and planned to watch the sunrise from the overlook.

According to investigators, David Vander Meer initially told authorities that he was preparing camera equipment when he heard his wife scream and fall from the trail. Search and rescue crews later recovered her body, and the death was ultimately classified as an accident because investigators lacked sufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges at the time.

The case was reopened years later after investigators received information from a former church supervisor who alleged that Vander Meer had privately confessed to pushing his wife from the cliff. Authorities say that revelation prompted a comprehensive review of the case and led detectives to reexamine witness statements, financial records, and other evidence.

Court documents allege that Vander Meer had been involved in a relationship with a teenage member of his church while serving as a youth pastor. Investigators claim he told the girl that they could only be together if his wife were no longer alive. Authorities say the relationship reportedly ended shortly before the couple’s trip to Zion National Park.

Financial records also became a focal point of the investigation. Prosecutors allege that life insurance coverage on the couple was increased from approximately $150,000 to roughly $600,000 before Bernadette Vander Meer’s death. Following the fatal fall, investigators say Vander Meer received more than $567,000 in insurance proceeds.

Authorities also interviewed friends and coworkers of Bernadette Vander Meer, some of whom reportedly expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death. While those concerns did not lead to criminal charges in 2006, investigators say they became significant when combined with newly developed evidence.

According to court records, Vander Meer later married the former church congregant identified in the investigation. That marriage eventually ended in divorce. He was also removed from his church position following allegations involving inappropriate conduct with youth group members.

Vander Meer remains in custody in Nevada as Utah prosecutors seek his extradition to Washington County, where the charges were filed. The arrest marks a dramatic development in a case that remained unresolved for nearly 20 years and highlights how cold case investigations can lead to criminal charges long after a death was originally ruled accidental.
