Inter Miami CF headed into the FIFA World Cup 2026 break riding a wave of momentum, and they delivered one final statement performance Tuesday night with a stunning 6-4 comeback victory over Philadelphia Union in one of the most entertaining matches of the MLS season.
After falling behind by two goals within the opening 10 minutes and trailing by multiple goals on several occasions, Inter Miami stormed back behind a sensational hat trick from Luis Suárez, a brace from Germán Berterame, and a late insurance strike from birthday celebrant Rodrigo De Paul to secure a fourth consecutive league victory.
Philadelphia stunned the home crowd early, striking in the fourth and 10th minutes to seize a quick 2-0 advantage. The visitors continued to pressure Miami and added another goal in the 20th minute to restore a two-goal cushion after Inter Miami had briefly cut into the deficit.
Miami’s first breakthrough came in the 13th minute when Berterame finished from close range after a pinpoint setup from Lionel Messi. The tally marked Berterame’s sixth goal of the MLS regular season, while Messi collected his seventh assist of the campaign.
Trailing 3-1, Inter Miami began to find its rhythm late in the first half. Suárez ignited the comeback in the 29th minute with a spectacular volley off a delivery from Ian Fray. Fray’s assist was his second of the season, while Suárez notched his fourth league goal.
The equalizer arrived in the 42nd minute through Berterame once again. Messi threaded a precise pass from the top of the box, and the Mexican international hammered a first-time finish into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the year and his first brace in Inter Miami colors.
Just two minutes later, Inter Miami completed the turnaround. De Paul fired an initial attempt that was saved, but Suárez pounced on the rebound from close range to give Miami a 4-3 lead heading toward halftime.
Philadelphia, however, had one more response before the break. Deep into stoppage time, the Union found an equalizer in the eighth added minute to cap a frantic first half and send the teams into intermission tied 4-4.
The match finally tilted decisively in Miami’s favor in the closing stages. In the 81st minute, Berterame saw an initial shot stopped inside the area before quickly recovering to feed Suárez in front of goal. The veteran striker buried the chance to complete his hat trick and put Inter Miami ahead 5-4.
Suárez now has six goals this regular season, while Berterame continued his standout performance by registering his fourth assist of the campaign.
De Paul delivered the finishing touch in stoppage time. The Argentine midfielder capped a swift counterattack in the third minute of added time, finishing from the right side of the box after a setup from Baltasar Rodríguez Silvetti. The goal was De Paul’s fourth of the regular season, while Silvetti earned his third assist.
The final whistle sealed a dramatic 6-4 victory and extended Inter Miami’s winning streak to four matches entering the FIFA World Cup 2026 break, giving the club significant momentum as it pauses league play after one of the most explosive attacking displays of the MLS season.
