Kash Patel’s Private Jet Scandal: Taxpayer Dollars for Hockey, UFC, and Girlfriend Getaways
“The FBI Director’s job is to protect Americans, not to live like a rockstar on the public dime.”
Jet-Setting at the Public’s Expense
If the FBI offered frequent-flier miles, Kash Patel would already be platinum. Since taking the helm of the Bureau in February, Patel has racked up flights on government-owned jets not just for national security duties, but for personal pleasure. According to flight logs and reporting by The New York Times, Patel used Department of Justice aircraft for at least three trips to Nashville, where his 26-year-old girlfriend, country musician Alexis Wilkins, resides.
These flights weren’t one-offs. Patel also jetted to Long Island to watch NHL legend Alexander Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record, after first attending the record-tying game days earlier in Washington. Taxpayer-funded Gulfstreams and Boeing 757s transported him back and forth a perk of his position, even if the destination was a hockey arena.
A Perk Turned into a Privilege
Patel’s defenders point out that FBI directors are barred from flying commercial due to security requirements, and directors must reimburse the government for personal use of jets. But here’s the catch: reimbursement is only required at the cost of a standard commercial airline ticket, leaving taxpayers on the hook for the vastly higher operating costs of private government jets. That loophole means Patel can take a Gulfstream to Nashville, pay a few hundred dollars in “reimbursement,” and leave taxpayers footing a bill in the tens of thousands.
Mixing Business and Pleasure
The Times reported that Patel conducted official business on at least one Nashville trip, meeting with Tennessee’s Republican senators and local law enforcement. But for the other trips, there’s no clear justification. Was Patel’s Nashville travel about Bureau business, or about visiting his girlfriend? That distinction matters when the public is paying. Meanwhile, Patel also flew to Miami to sit ringside with Donald Trump at a UFC fight night in April, an appearance that underscores his role as a loyalist more interested in showmanship than sober law enforcement.
A Director Who Courts Attention
Unlike his predecessors who maintained a low public profile, Patel has leaned into spectacle. He’s posted staged photos of himself in camo gear and sunglasses, crafted for social media virality. He’s basked in the spotlight at sporting events. And now, he’s facing growing outrage for treating government aircraft like his personal Uber Black.
Why This Matters
The FBI director has unparalleled access to the nation’s most sensitive intelligence and law enforcement power. Using that office for personal perks erodes public trust, especially at a time when faith in institutions is already strained. Kash Patel’s private jet junkets aren’t just about waste they’re about abuse of power, entitlement, and the normalization of corruption under the Trump administration.
Taxpayer Dollars are Meant to Keep the Country Safe.
Instead, under Kash Patel’s watch, they’re being burned at 30,000 feet so he can catch a hockey game, visit his girlfriend, or cozy up to Trump at a UFC fight.
