Kentucky’s home crowd finally got the SEC win it had been waiting for. Behind a poised performance from freshman quarterback Cutter Boley and a defense that feasted on Florida’s mistakes, the Wildcats rolled past the Gators 38-7 on Saturday night at Kroger Field.
Boley threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns, Seth McGowan added two rushing scores, and Dante Dowdell broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run as Kentucky (4-5, 2-5 SEC) earned its first conference home victory since defeating Florida 33-14 on Sept. 30, 2023.
The win came in convincing fashion as the Wildcats took advantage of four Florida turnovers, including three first-half interceptions thrown by freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. The Gators (3-6, 2-4) never recovered from their miscues and managed just 262 total yards in their second straight loss since the firing of head coach Billy Napier on Oct. 19.
Boley was efficient and composed, completing passes to 10 different receivers. He connected with J.J. Hester for a 29-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter and later found Jason Patterson on a 15-yard score just before halftime. The Wildcats led 24-7 at the break and never looked back.
Kentucky opened the second half with a tone-setting 13-play, 75-yard drive that chewed up 7:26 of game clock. McGowan capped the march with a 5-yard touchdown run — his second of the night — to make it 31-7.
In one of the strangest sequences of the season, the final 35 seconds of the first half featured four turnovers between the two teams.
Kentucky’s Quay’sheed Scott intercepted Lagway and returned it 55 yards to the Florida 19. On the very next play, Boley fumbled, and Gator linebacker Aaron Chiles recovered at the Kentucky 22.
Three plays later, Wildcat defender Daveren Rayner intercepted another Lagway throw. And on Kentucky’s ensuing snap, Florida’s Bryce Thornton picked off Boley.
The chaotic exchange ended mercifully as the first-half clock expired, symbolizing the sloppy night that doomed Florida’s chances.
Lagway, who had been one of Florida’s bright spots in an otherwise tumultuous season, finished just 7-of-17 passing for 68 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by fellow freshman Tramell Jones Jr. after halftime.
The Gator defense, ranked 32nd nationally in scoring defense entering the game (20.5 points per game), was forced into short-field situations all night and surrendered 401 total yards.
Former Kentucky starter Zach Calzada also made headlines during the week for the wrong reasons. The transfer quarterback, who injured his shoulder earlier in the season and lost his job to Boley, posted a viral social media video flashing $100 bills in response to criticism.
After national backlash, Calzada apologized Thursday night, and the Kentucky athletic department released a statement calling his behavior “inappropriate and not reflective of the program’s standards.”
Florida: The Gators’ season continues to spiral. Turnovers and inconsistency have plagued the offense, and with two games left, Florida must regroup to avoid its first losing season since 2021.
Kentucky: Mark Stoops’ squad has newfound momentum. With back-to-back wins, the Wildcats can still claw their way into bowl eligibility. A victory next week over FCS No. 5 Tennessee Tech would set up must-win opportunities at No. 15 Vanderbilt or No. 14 Louisville.
Florida: Travels to face No. 7 Mississippi. Kentucky: Hosts Tennessee Tech in a nonconference matchup.
