Kirill Kaprizov Records Hat Trick as Wild Ruin Panthers Opening Night With 4-1 Victory

Kaprizov Leads Minnesota Past Florida With Four Point Performance

Kirill Kaprizov recorded a hat trick and added an assist, Matt Boldy scored in the opening minute, and the Minnesota Wild spoiled the Florida Panthers’ home opener with a 4-1 victory on Saturday night. Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt continued his impressive start to the season, stopping 29 shots to help Minnesota secure the road victory.

Wallstedt has started all five of the Wild’s games this season, posting a 3-1-1 record with a .936 save percentage and a 1.78 goals against average. Minnesota improved to 3-1-1 behind Kaprizov’s offensive explosion, while Florida dropped to 2-1-2 after struggling to generate consistent scoring opportunities.

Minnesota Jumps Ahead in the First Period

The Wild wasted little time taking control of the game. Boldy scored just 53 seconds after the opening faceoff, giving Minnesota an early 1-0 advantage and recording his first goal of the season.

Kaprizov extended the lead to 2-0 with 13:42 remaining in the first period, putting the Wild in command and giving Florida an early deficit to overcome. The Panthers struggled to find an offensive rhythm, and Minnesota carried its two-goal advantage into the second period.

Kaprizov Completes His Hat Trick

Kaprizov struck again five minutes into the middle frame, increasing Minnesota’s lead to 3-0 and putting the Panthers in an increasingly difficult position. Florida eventually got on the scoreboard through Matthew Tkachuk, who collected his own rebound and put the puck past Wallstedt for his team-leading third goal of the season.

The goal gave the Panthers some momentum, but Minnesota’s defense and goaltending prevented Florida from mounting a comeback. Kaprizov sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 1:04 remaining, completing his hat trick and finishing the night with four points.

The performance continued a remarkable trend for Minnesota. The Wild improved to 42-5-2 all time when Kaprizov records at least three points in a game. He has accomplished the feat 49 times, by far the most in franchise history.

Panthers Continue to Search for Offensive Consistency

Florida had 29 shots on goal but managed just one goal against Wallstedt, who continued to establish himself as a reliable presence in the Minnesota net. Panthers goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped 25 shots in the loss.

The Panthers also struggled on special teams, finishing 0-for-5 on the power play. Florida has converted just one of its first 28 power play opportunities this season, leaving the team searching for answers with the man advantage.

The offensive challenges have been particularly noticeable early in the season. Florida has scored just nine goals through its first five games and has held a lead for only eight minutes and 40 seconds during that stretch. The Panthers are also playing without captain Aleksander Barkov and forward Brad Marchand, two significant absences as the team attempts to build momentum early in the campaign.

Ekblad Makes Panthers History

Despite the disappointing result, Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad reached a significant franchise milestone. Saturday’s game marked his 807th appearance with the Panthers, moving him past Barkov for the most games played by a player in franchise history.

The milestone provided a bright spot on a night when Florida struggled to solve Minnesota’s defense and capitalize on its power play opportunities. The matchup also marked Florida’s final home opener of the NHL season. The Panthers’ first five games were all home openers, as Carolina, San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles each began their home schedules against Florida.

Next NHL Games for Both Teams

The Wild will return home to host the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night as they look to build on their strong start to the season. The Panthers, meanwhile, will travel to Buffalo for a Monday afternoon matchup, hoping to improve their offensive production and find a solution to their early power-play struggles.

Minnesota left Florida with a convincing victory fueled by Kaprizov’s four point performance and Wallstedt’s steady goaltending. For the Panthers, the home opening loss underscored the need for greater scoring consistency and improved special-teams execution as the season continues.
