Lawrence’s Trip Turns to Triumph as Jaguars Shock Chiefs 31-28 on Monday Night Football

Trevor Lawrence turned a moment of chaos into one of the most unforgettable plays of his career. With the Jacksonville Jaguars trailing by four and less than 30 seconds to play, the fourth-year quarterback took the snap — and immediately hit the turf. Right guard Patrick Mekari had accidentally stepped on Lawrence’s foot, sending him tumbling several yards into the backfield.

Lawrence stumbled as he tried to get up, steadied himself, and then — somehow — sprinted forward through a stunned Kansas City defense for a 1-yard touchdown with 23 seconds remaining, lifting the Jaguars to a dramatic 31-28 victory over the Chiefs on Monday Night Football.

It was the kind of wild, improbable finish that can define a season. “I was just trying to make something out of nothing,” Lawrence said, grinning after the game. “I thought about throwing it away, but then I saw a lane. I just went for it. I guess I caught a few guys by surprise.”

He certainly did — including several Kansas City defenders, such as Chris Jones, who appeared to pause when Lawrence fell. By the time they reacted, Lawrence was diving across the goal line.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak to Kansas City and pushed Jacksonville to 4-1, matching its win total from last season.

Lawrence’s stat line — 18 of 25 for 221 yards, one passing touchdown, two rushing scores, and two turnovers — hardly told the story of his poise under pressure.

After Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs (2-3) on a go-ahead touchdown drive to take a 28-24 lead with 1:45 left, Lawrence answered with perhaps the best drive of his career.

He fired a perfect deep strike to rookie receiver Brian Thomas Jr. for 33 yards, then connected with Dyami Brown for another chunk gain. On the next play, Kansas City’s Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas, setting the stage for Lawrence’s trip-turned-touchdown run.

Mahomes had one final chance with 16 seconds remaining, but the Chiefs’ last gasp ended harmlessly. His final pass fell incomplete as the Jaguars’ sideline erupted in celebration.

Mahomes finished with two touchdowns, while running back Kareem Hunt added two rushing scores. The Chiefs, who had won 23 straight games when leading by at least 14 points, watched that streak crumble in Jacksonville.

Kansas City’s 14-0 first-quarter lead came after a Lawrence fumble at the goal line, but the Jaguars clawed back behind their defense and timely plays from their young stars.

Linebacker Devin Lloyd, the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, turned the tide in the third quarter with a play for the ages.

Lloyd jumped a Mahomes pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster at the goal line and raced 99 yards for a touchdown — the longest interception return in NFL regular-season history by a linebacker.

He juked both Mahomes and Hunt during the return, then followed a convoy led by Josh Hines-Allen down the sideline before holding off Tyquan Thornton’s desperate strip attempt at the 5-yard line.

“That was one of those plays you dream about,” Lloyd said. “You just react and go. I saw daylight, and I wasn’t stopping.”

Rookie sensation Travis Hunter — the Jaguars’ two-way star and reigning Heisman Trophy winner — made a major impact once again.

Hunter hauled in a spectacular 44-yard catch in the third quarter, leaping over Conner and holding on after a hard hit from safety Bryan Cook. It marked the fourth-longest reception by a rookie this season and set up a touchdown that tied the game at 14-14.

He also showcased his versatility earlier in the game, taking a short pass in the flat and juking two defenders for a 12-yard gain.

The Jaguars (4-1) return home on Sunday to host the Seattle Seahawks, looking to keep their momentum rolling in the AFC race.

The Chiefs (2-3), meanwhile, will look to rebound as they host the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football — with questions swirling about a team that suddenly finds itself below .500.

For Jacksonville, though, the night belonged to Trevor Lawrence — and a stumble that somehow became a statement.

“It’s a big win,” Lawrence said. “That’s a great team. They’ve been on top for a long time. But tonight, we showed we can go toe-to-toe with anyone.”
