Purdy’s Five-TD Night Lifts 49ers Past Bears 42-38, Sets Up NFC Top-Seed Showdown

The San Francisco 49ers spent nearly the entire night looking unstoppable. When it mattered most, they just needed one defensive play. Brock Purdy threw a go-ahead 38-yard touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings with 2:15 remaining, and a beleaguered San Francisco defense finally delivered a stop on the final snap as the 49ers hung on to beat the Chicago Bears 42-38 on Sunday Night Football.

After dominating for the first 58 minutes, the 49ers (12-4) were forced to watch as Caleb Williams drove the Bears down the field in the closing seconds. Chicago reached the San Francisco 2-yard line for one last shot at the win, but Bryce Huff flushed Williams from the pocket, and his desperation throw short-hopped intended receiver Jahdae Walker in the end zone to seal San Francisco’s sixth straight victory.

The win sets up a massive Week 18 showdown for the top seed in the NFC. The 49ers can clinch the NFC West, a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a victory over Seattle (13-3) on Saturday night. With the Super Bowl scheduled to be played at Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 8, San Francisco now has a chance to stay home for the entire postseason.

Purdy continued his remarkable run, following last week’s career-high five-touchdown performance against Indianapolis with another five-TD night — three through the air and two on the ground. He finished 24 of 33 for 303 yards, becoming the sixth player since the AFL-NFL merger to post back-to-back games with at least five total touchdowns.

Christian McCaffrey powered the offense as well, rushing for 140 yards and a touchdown while adding 41 yards receiving.

Chicago (11-5), which had already clinched the NFC North, saw its hopes of earning the conference’s top seed come to an end. The Bears can still secure the No. 2 seed with a win over Detroit next Sunday.

Williams was sharp for much of the night, completing 25 of 42 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns. However, the rookie quarterback couldn’t deliver a seventh late comeback after already setting an NFL record with six wins when trailing in the final two minutes of regulation earlier this season.

Neither defense had many answers after Chicago’s stunning start. On the opening play, Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards intercepted a deflected pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown — Chicago’s first defensive score on the opening snap in at least 45 years, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Purdy quickly erased that mistake with a 65-yard touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard scoring pass to Jake Tonges. San Francisco moved the ball with ease for much of the first half, as Purdy added two rushing touchdowns and McCaffrey scored on the ground. Despite allowing two deep touchdown passes from Williams, the 49ers carried a 28-21 lead into halftime.

The shootout continued after the break. The teams traded touchdowns on the first three drives of the second half, with D’Andre Swift scoring twice on the ground for Chicago. Purdy answered with one of the night’s signature plays, rolling right from the 6-yard line, eluding two pass rushers and flipping a touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk on a play that lasted more than eight seconds.

The Bears briefly grabbed the lead late when Cairo Santos kicked a short field goal with 5:22 remaining, putting Chicago ahead 38-35 after the offense stalled in the red zone. But Purdy responded one final time, finding Jennings deep down the sideline to reclaim the lead and set up the dramatic finish.

Up next, the Bears host Detroit on Sunday, while the 49ers return home to face Seattle on Saturday night with the NFC’s top seed on the line.
