Fort Lauderdale Shooting Caught on Camera, Suspect in Custody
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Surveillance footage has revealed the tense moments leading up to an armed robbery and shooting that unfolded Tuesday night in Fort Lauderdale, leading to the arrest of 61-year-old Alexander Albert Walkins.
The incident occurred just after 6 p.m. outside a convenience store in the 800 block of Northwest 10th Terrace. Video footage shows the suspect, wrapped in a blue Miami Dolphins blanket, engaged in a conversation with the victim, identified only as “Reggie,” who was wearing a white shirt.
According to police, the exchange quickly escalated into a heated argument, with a voice shouting, “For what? I’m poor as you!” before Walkins pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot. The bullet struck Reggie in the leg.
Following the shooting, Walkins was seen on video robbing the injured victim at gunpoint before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.
Reggie managed to enter the convenience store for help and was later transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he is expected to recover, police said.
Fort Lauderdale officers arrived swiftly, securing the scene and interviewing witnesses. Walkins was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail. Jail records indicate he faces multiple charges, including:
- Attempted felony murder
- Illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Violation of parole
- Two counts of armed robbery
Police have confirmed that this incident is unrelated to the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Tanasia Atterberry, which occurred just a day prior. However, it marks the second shooting in Fort Lauderdale within a 24-hour span.
Authorities continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
