Charges Filed Against Florida Man Accused of Abusing Girlfriend’s Five-Year-Old Son with Autism

Prosecutors File Nine Charges in Alleged Abuse of Young Boy with Autism

Prosecutors have filed nine criminal charges against a North Miami Beach man accused of severely abusing his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son, a child with autism who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Authorities say the charges reflect the extent of the injuries and the seriousness of the allegations.

Accusations and Criminal Counts

Daniel Eduardo Romero, 34, has been indicted on four counts of aggravated child abuse causing great bodily harm involving torture, four counts of child neglect causing great bodily harm, and one count of tampering with a victim, according to court records. Prosecutors allege Romero inflicted significant trauma on the child while acting as a caregiver in the home. Romero has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held without bond as the case proceeds.

Child Found Unresponsive

Police responded to a home in the 1400 block of Northeast 179th Street after receiving a call that the child was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. Body camera footage released by authorities shows first responders administering CPR before regaining a pulse. The boy was transported to a trauma center in critical condition and placed on a ventilator. Investigators say the child suffered extensive injuries, including bleeding in the brain, lacerations to the liver, kidney and spleen, a broken shoulder, and widespread bruising. Authorities allege Romero initially gave conflicting explanations for the injuries, including claims of accidental falls, before emergency services were called.

Mother Also Facing Charges

The child’s mother, 32-year-old Cynthia Elaine Hernandez, has also been charged in connection with the case. She surrendered to authorities weeks after her son’s hospitalization and faces charges including child neglect, failure to report child neglect, and providing false information to law enforcement. Prosecutors allege inconsistencies in her statements delayed aspects of the investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

The child remains under medical care as the legal process moves forward. Law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that additional information may emerge as the case advances through the court system. If convicted on the most serious counts, Romero could face significant prison time under Florida law governing aggravated child abuse and neglect resulting in great bodily harm.
