The Philadelphia 76ers showed resilience and depth in a high-stakes Eastern Conference Play-In matchup Wednesday night, defeating the Orlando Magic 109–97 to secure the No. 7 seed in the playoffs despite the absence of star center Joel Embiid.
Tyrese Maxey delivered a standout performance with 31 points, including seven consecutive points late in the fourth quarter that helped Philadelphia pull away and close the door on Orlando’s comeback hopes. The All-Star starter’s leadership proved critical as the Sixers adjusted to life without Embiid, who recently underwent an emergency appendectomy in Houston.
Rookie forward V.J. Edgecombe continued his impressive debut season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, providing energy on both ends of the floor. Veteran center Andre Drummond filled the void inside with 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, anchoring the paint in Embiid’s absence.
Kelly Oubre Jr. added 19 points, while Paul George chipped in 16 points and sparked momentum in the third quarter with a fadeaway jumper that extended the Sixers’ lead to seven and forced an Orlando timeout. George later created another key highlight by poking the ball loose and feeding Edgecombe for a dunk over Jalen Suggs that pushed the lead to 73–62. The emotional sequence led to a brief confrontation and a taunting technical on Edgecombe as Philadelphia’s intensity surged in front of a roaring crowd.
Although Embiid has no official timetable for his return, his surprise appearance on the bench Wednesday energized teammates and fans alike as the Sixers punched their ticket to a first-round series beginning Sunday at Boston.
Despite the loss, Orlando received a strong offensive effort from Desmond Bane, who scored 34 points to lead all scorers. Bane, who averaged 20.1 points across all 82 regular-season games, nearly sparked a late comeback with a clutch three-pointer that trimmed Philadelphia’s lead to two late in the third quarter.
Anthony Black followed with another three that brought the Magic within 87–86, briefly threatening to swing momentum. However, Orlando couldn’t sustain the push down the stretch as Maxey and the Sixers executed efficiently in the final minutes.
The Magic entered the Play-In needing this matchup after a late-season collapse against Boston cost them home-court advantage in the 7–8 game, a missed opportunity that ultimately proved costly.
With the victory, Philadelphia advances as the No. 7 seed and will open a first-round playoff series Sunday against Boston.
Orlando’s season remains alive. The Magic will host Charlotte on Friday night for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The winner earns the No. 8 seed and a first-round matchup with Detroit.
Charlotte advanced after edging Miami 127–126 in overtime when Miles Bridges blocked Davion Mitchell’s last-second layup attempt. Hornets guard LaMelo Ball is expected to play Friday despite being fined $35,000 for an uncalled flagrant foul that caused a back injury to Miami’s Bam Adebayo in that contest.
For Philadelphia, the focus now shifts to Boston—and the possible return timeline for Embiid—as the Sixers prepare to carry their momentum into the postseason.
