Measles Case Reported At Miami Palmetto Senior High School

Measles Case Reported

A student at Miami Palmetto Senior High School in Pinecrest, Florida, has been diagnosed with measles, marking the first reported case in Miami-Dade County this year. School officials confirmed the case on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Due to HIPAA regulations, the student’s age and grade level have not been disclosed. The school is collaborating closely with local health authorities to ensure the health and safety of the school community.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. It spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Initial symptoms typically appear seven to fourteen days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. These symptoms are followed by a rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

The best prevention against measles is the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children receive two doses: the first between 12 and 15 months of age and the second between 4 and 6 years old. Individuals who are unvaccinated or unsure of their vaccination status are advised to consult with their healthcare providers about receiving the vaccine.

This case in Miami-Dade County comes amid a broader national context where measles cases have been reported in several states, including a significant outbreak in Texas with over 150 cases and at least one death of an unvaccinated child.

In response to the confirmed case, Miami Palmetto Senior High School has notified parents and staff and is working with health officials to monitor the situation. The school is also organizing a vaccination drive to ensure that unvaccinated students have access to the MMR vaccine.

Parents are encouraged to ensure their children’s vaccinations are up to date and to be vigilant for any symptoms of measles. If symptoms develop, it is important to contact a healthcare provider immediately and avoid attending school or public places to prevent further spread of the virus.
