Messi Magic Sparks Comeback as Inter Miami Stun Orlando in Florida Derby

Reigning MLS Cup champions Inter Miami CF are back on track—and so is their global superstar, Lionel Messi. Messi delivered a vintage performance Sunday night, scoring twice as Miami stormed back from a two-goal deficit to defeat rivals Orlando City SC 4-2 in a thrilling Florida Derby clash on Sunday Night Soccer.

After a quiet showing in Miami’s season-opening 3-0 loss to Los Angeles FC, Messi responded emphatically. The Argentine No. 10 led the charge in Orlando, showcasing the brilliance that has defined his MLS tenure.

Orlando controlled much of the first half and built a 2-0 advantage, putting Miami under early pressure. But the momentum shifted dramatically after halftime when Mateo Silvetti ignited the comeback with a stunning long-range strike—his first goal of the season following a breakout 2025 playoff run.

Moments later, Messi took over. He opened his 2026 account with his 51st goal in just 55 MLS matches, cutting the deficit and energizing the visitors. Not long after, Messi struck again—this time on a trademark free kick that left the Orlando crowd stunned. The celebration added even more drama, as Messi turned toward the supporters’ section and exchanged words with the Lions’ bench.

Miami’s attack kept pouring on. Midfielder Telasco Segovia delivered a standout performance, recording a goal and two assists. His go-ahead strike, set up in part by Messi’s vision, completed the comeback and sealed Miami’s first win of the 2026 campaign.

The match marked Messi’s first Florida Derby appearance in Orlando since joining Miami, and the two-time Landon Donovan MLS MVP made it one to remember with a brace and an assist in a signature performance.

With momentum now on their side, Inter Miami will look to build on the victory when they travel to face D.C. United next Saturday, March 7, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

For Miami, this comeback wasn’t just about three points—it was a statement. And with Messi back at his best, the Herons suddenly look every bit like defending champions once again.
