Inter Miami CF secured a statement road victory on Saturday night, defeating Toronto FC 4–2 at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada, in a match defined by attacking firepower, record-breaking history, and a second-half surge led by the club’s star-studded core.
The breakthrough came just before the interval when midfielder Inter Miami CF took control of the match through Rodrigo De Paul. In the 44th minute, De Paul unleashed a powerful half-volley from outside the box after a free-kick sequence, drilling his effort into the bottom-left corner after the initial attempt was blocked by the wall. The strike marked his third goal of the MLS regular season and gave Miami a deserved 1–0 lead heading into halftime.
Toronto FC goalkeeper Sean St. Clair kept the hosts within touching distance late in the first half, producing a crucial stoppage-time save to deny Dániel Sallói from close range, preventing what could have been a damaging second goal before the break.
Inter Miami doubled their advantage early in the second half when Luis Suárez finished clinically in the 56th minute. The veteran striker latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Lionel Messi, finishing first time with his left foot from the left side of the box. The goal was Suárez’s third of the season, while Messi collected his third assist of the campaign.
The pressure continued, and in the 73rd minute, left-back Sergio Reguilón scored his first goal for Inter Miami CF, arriving in the right side of the box to finish a low, driven pass from Messi. The Spanish defender’s milestone goal made it 3–0, and it further highlighted Miami’s fluid attacking structure.
Just two minutes later, Messi added his own signature moment. Combining with De Paul, he burst into the box and calmly slotted home a left-footed finish from the center of the area to make it 4–0. The goal marked his ninth of the MLS season and came with added historical significance.
With that strike, Messi reached 100 regular-season goal contributions in just 64 MLS matches, becoming the fastest player in league history to reach the milestone—doing so in 31 fewer games than the previous record holder, Sebastian Giovinco.
Despite the deficit, Toronto FC refused to fold. The home side scored twice in the closing stages, finding goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes to narrow the final scoreline to 4–2. However, the comeback effort ultimately fell short against Miami’s early second-half dominance.
With the win, Toronto FC was unable to slow down one of the league’s strongest away teams. Inter Miami now holds the best road record in MLS this season, collecting 19 points with six wins, one draw, and just one loss away from home.
The match also reinforced the impact of Inter Miami’s veteran core. Messi finished with one goal and two assists, De Paul contributed a goal and an assist, and Suárez and Reguilón each added crucial finishes in a complete team performance.
Inter Miami will remain on the road for their next MLS fixture, traveling to Ohio to face FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium on Wednesday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
