Mets Pull Away as Ewing Delivers in Key Fourth Inning

Rookie A.J. Ewing had three hits and drove in three runs as the New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 9-4 on Monday night. The game was tied 4-4 in the fourth inning when Bo Bichette gave the Mets the lead with an RBI single.

Ewing followed with a two-run double, putting New York ahead 7-4 and giving the Mets the momentum they needed to pull away. Marcus Semien doubled twice and drove in a run, while Bichette added two singles and an RBI as the Mets finished with 16 hits.

Mets Pitching Settles Down After Second Inning

Jonah Tong, recalled from Triple-A earlier Monday, earned the win to improve to 2-1. He struck out the first four batters he faced and finished with seven strikeouts over five innings.

Tong allowed four runs and four hits, with all four runs coming during Miami’s four-run second inning. Four Mets relievers followed with one scoreless inning apiece to complete a six-hit effort by New York’s pitching staff.

Marlins Take Early Lead Behind Pauley’s Home Run

Miami briefly took control in the second inning after Javier Sanoja delivered an RBI triple before Graham Pauley launched a three-run homer into the Mets’ bullpen in right field. The four-run inning gave the Marlins a 4-3 advantage.

The Mets responded in the third when Francisco Alvarez delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4 before New York’s decisive fourth-inning rally.

Errors Help Mets Score Twice in First

New York also benefited from two Miami errors in the opening inning. Juan Soto scored from first base when second baseman Sanoja threw the ball past shortstop Otto Lopez and into left field while attempting to complete a force play.

Bichette then scored from third when Marlins catcher Joe Mack committed a throwing error, giving the Mets two unearned runs before Miami answered in the second.

Pérez Struggles Continue

Marlins starter Eury Pérez was charged with seven runs, five earned, and allowed a season-high 10 hits over four innings. The outing continued a difficult stretch for Pérez, who has surrendered 18 runs and 21 hits over 11 2/3 innings across his last three starts. Despite Miami’s early offensive burst, the Marlins were unable to keep pace after New York regained the lead in the fourth.

Mets and Marlins Set for Tuesday Rematch

The Mets and Marlins will meet again Tuesday, with New York sending left-hander Sean Manaea to the mound. Manaea enters the game with a 4-7 record and a 4.70 ERA. Miami will counter with veteran right-hander Sandy Alcantara, who is 13-9 with a 3.54 ERA. The matchup gives the Marlins an opportunity to bounce back quickly after Monday’s 9-4 loss.
