Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police Sunday outside Hard Rock Stadium for a driving violation, but has since been released from custody, the team announced. Despite the incident, Hill is still expected to play in the Dolphins’ Week 1 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The traffic incident occurred just a block away from Hard Rock Stadium, and according to the Dolphins, several of Hill’s teammates witnessed the event and stopped to offer their support. Hill was initially stopped for speeding, but the situation escalated into a verbal altercation with law enforcement. As a result, Hill was placed in handcuffs and cited for reckless driving.
Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent, described the situation in an interview with ESPN as “heartbreaking” and “completely unnecessary.” Rosenhaus expressed concerns about how Hill was treated during the incident, stating, “We will investigate. We will look out for Tyreek.” He added that seeing his client in handcuffs was “mindboggling,” but he was ultimately relieved that the situation did not escalate further.
“We’re just thankful Tyreek is OK, and we appreciate the team’s efforts in helping to deescalate the situation,” Rosenhaus added.
Earlier on Sunday, a video surfaced showing Hill being surrounded by multiple police officers while handcuffed. However, the Dolphins have confirmed that Hill has been released from custody and will be available for their season opener against the Jaguars.
Despite the off-field issue, Hill remains one of the Dolphins’ key offensive weapons heading into the 2024 NFL season.
