Michigan Church Attack Leaves One Dead, Nine Injured in Grand Blanc
“Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.” — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer
A Sunday Morning Massacre in Grand Blanc
A Mormon congregation in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, became the site of terror on Sunday morning when a 40-year-old man drove his truck through the front doors of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, opened fire with an assault rifle, and set the building ablaze. At least one person is confirmed dead, nine more were wounded, and several remain in critical condition.
Grand Blanc Township, located about 60 miles northwest of Detroit, is now grappling with the aftermath of what officials are calling one of the most violent attacks on a house of worship in Michigan’s history.
Police Response and Suspect Neutralized
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye confirmed that the suspect was shot and killed by responding officers. He praised the two officers who entered the burning building under active gunfire to stop the shooter.
“We do not believe that there’s a threat to the public,” Renye told reporters. “We believe that we have the guy who did this.”
Authorities said investigators believe the suspect deliberately set fire to the church after ramming his vehicle through the doors, noting that more victims may be discovered as search teams sift through the charred structure.
State and National Leaders React
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer posted on X, formerly Twitter, that her “heart is breaking” for the community of Grand Blanc. “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” she said.
President Donald Trump responded on Truth Social, describing the incident as a “horrendous” attack and vowing federal assistance. He suggested the assault appeared to be “yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”
Motive Still Unknown
As of Sunday afternoon, investigators had not identified a motive. Police confirmed they are searching the suspect’s residence and cellphone records for possible evidence of planning, ideology, or accomplices. Chief Renye would not speculate on whether the attack was religiously motivated, but emphasized the brutality of a man ramming his truck into a crowded Sunday service, firing indiscriminately, and then lighting the building on fire.
Church Response
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement through spokesperson Doug Andersen calling the attack a “tragic act of violence” and expressed condolences for the victims, their families, and the wider Grand Blanc community.
A Community in Mourning
Witnesses described chaos as flames consumed the church while congregants scrambled for exits. Social media footage showed thick smoke rising from the building, engulfing the structure that just minutes earlier had been filled with worshippers. Authorities have urged patience as fire investigators, the FBI, and local law enforcement secure the site and recover evidence. With the death toll potentially rising, Grand Blanc joins the long list of American towns left scarred by gun violence in places of worship.
