Harrowing Rescue Caught on Video
Newly released video captures the dramatic moments a bystander rushed into the waters off St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands to try to save a Minnesota woman after she was attacked by a shark. Police confirmed the woman, identified as 56-year-old Arlene Lillis of Minnesota, later died from her injuries. The footage shows bystanders shouting and rushing toward the scene as the attack unfolded near Dorsch Beach in the late afternoon.
Bystander Bravely Enters Water
The video shows a man, identified as a registered nurse and former lifeguard, wading into the water to reach Lillis despite warnings of a shark in the area. Witnesses reported that Lillis had lost her arm below the elbow during the attack. The rescuer managed to pull her toward shore through blood-filled water while reassuring her and keeping her conscious, with the help of additional bystanders.
Emergency Response and Hospitalization
Once on land, beachgoers worked to render aid until emergency personnel arrived. Fire and rescue crews responded quickly and transported Lillis to a local hospital for treatment. Despite these efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. Authorities said the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 8. Lillis and her husband had recently arrived on the island for a winter stay.
Officials Respond and Investigation Underway
Territorial leaders expressed condolences to Lillis’s family and praised the courage of those who tried to help. Officials noted that shark attacks in the U.S. Virgin Islands are extremely rare, with only a handful recorded over several decades. The species responsible for the attack has not been confirmed, and authorities continue investigating the incident.
Context and Safety Reminder
The Caribbean waters around St. Croix host several species of sharks that can be dangerous to swimmers, though attacks remain uncommon. Authorities are reminding visitors and residents to exercise caution when swimming in open waters.
